    This Japanese sweets shops is known for the famous Kyoto confection “Senju Sembei” and the Gion branch is at the east side of the Minami-za (theater). In addition to the sales area which is full of sweets for souvenirs or gifts, there is also a teahouse where guests can enjoy sweets. They have put together a very comprehensive menu of Japanese sweets to enjoy with assorted tastes and colors including Kyozenzai with carefully selected dainagon azuki (red bean) and the Kyo-no-Mai Parfait topped with Senju Sembei. Their private room (accommodating up to 8 people), which was used as a storeroom in the Taisho period, requires advance reservation. The closest station is Gion-Shijo Station.

    This coffee stand located in the Shimogyo Ward of Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture operates from the entrance of a renovated townhouse built 100 years ago. Each cup of the carefully-made hand drip coffee is a treasure, rich in aroma and flavor. There is also a food menu including the Kamonegi Sandwich made with aigamo duck, Kyoto vegetables and light brown miso, and lunch is popular. Available for both take-out and eat-in. They occasionally hold hand drip coffee classes suitable for beginners.

    Wonderful little cafe, hidden in a side street near the Nishi-Hongan Temple. Excellent coffee and sandwiches. An area with some small shops is under development in the backyard of the cafe.

They offer carefully home-roasted coffee and a complete food menu with mainly light bread foods. The store-exclusive Traditional Hayashi Rice is a popular tourist lunch. The Black Sesame Macha Ice Cream is another popular option for a break or walking accompaniment. Tourists can rest their feet and enjoy a relaxing break in the Western retro atmosphere.

    Tourist trap trying to serve western breakfast options to the hordes in Gion. Food was bland, coffee was insipid. On the upside service was fast and efficient.

    Sweets cafe Gion Tsujiri is an old shop serving Uji-cha tea on the 6th floor of JR Kyoto Isetan, a department store directly connected to JR Kyoto Station. Here one can taste a rich variety of sweet flavors coming from the premium Uji-cha tea, from matcha parfait to anmitsu (syrup-covered bean jam) and matcha mousse. Its location makes it convenient for both locals and tourists, and is a popular place to go for authentic Kyoto sweets. The wide windows of the interior command views of the townscape below.

    The ENGAWA cafe specializes in fu (wheat gluten). They have parfaits with nama-fu (fresh gluten) that you can only try there, as well as creative cuisine made with nama-fu and roast yaki-fu that you'd only get at a fu shop. Often used for welcome and farewell parties and girls' nights out, guests love their cute and tasty menu items. Their seasonal sweets are also popular.

    We dropped in during Gion Festival and got seated at the bar. Atmosphere is cosy, the food is excellent, prices are very reasonable, and the staff is friendly. Highly recommended.
