This Western-style building constructed in the Meiji era is an elegant dessert café and a ten minute walk from Keihan Gion Shijo Station. The guests can choose from seven different styles of room and indulge themselves as they enjoy live piano performances four times a day and twice in the evening. The Rococo style “guest room”, which was once used as a drawing room, is only used for afternoon tea. Visitors can spend an elegant afternoon enjoying cakes and tea using British style afternoon tea stands, with scones and sandwiches.

We had a traditional afternoon tea at the luxurious western-style building Chorakukan built in 1909. The tea was an original Ceylon-based blend that was very fragrant and memorable. It smelled so...

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku Gionmachiminamigawa 570-8
This cafe is inside a Kyoto machiya house that has been passed down for four generations. The shop offers a truly Japanese experience as you remove your shoes at the door, step into their floor-seating room and gaze out on the small inner garden while you enjoy their luxurious sweet treats. Their most popular dish is the Tofu Matcha Cheesecake, made without any eggs, milk, butter or other dairy products. They replace the cheese with tofu to create a mellow, creamy half-baked cheesecake delicacy. It has earned high marks not only from those suffering from food allergies, but the calorie-conscious and those who prefer less-sweet treats as well. In the evening the cafe becomes a home bar that is not open to first time customers.

An absolutely lovely cafe and a hidden gem in the heart of Gion, very peaceful and calming amongst the busy streets! The whole cafe was very traditional with beautiful tatami mats and a lovely small...

This is a town house-style cafe of the popular traditional Kyoto “Maeda Coffee” on the road to tourist spot Kodaiji Temple in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture. They offer carefully home-roasted coffee and a complete food menu with mainly light bread foods. The store-exclusive Traditional Hayashi Rice is a popular tourist lunch. The Black Sesame Macha Ice Cream is another popular option for a break or walking accompaniment. Tourists can rest their feet and enjoy a relaxing break in the Western retro atmosphere.

Im a little disappointed to see others describe the fare here as an attempt to cater to Western folks, as this exposes a bit of tourist ignorance. This is a kissaten through and through - a...

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
