A cafe housed in a remodeled former ryokan inn located in Kudoyama Town, Ito County, Wakayama Prefecture, an area connected to Warring States period samurai Sanada Yukimura. As befitting a former ryokan, the café’s interior, reminiscent of an old-fashioned Japanese home, is quiet and subdued. From the Japanese-style room on the second floor, patrons can enjoy a meal or a cup of tea while gazing out over a tranquil rural landscape. The café’s lunches, made with enzyme brown rice and an abundance of local vegetables, are particularly popular. The café’s smooth Sanada pudding can be lined up in two rows of three to create Sanada Yukimura’s banner emblem of six squares in six circles.

I was going to catch the train when I ran into a sign that pointed to a café. So I followed it and came to what looked like a neat old house just a block off the main tourist path. It actually was...

This restaurant is connected directly to Shirahama’s beer makers Nagisa Beer, and is located in the scenic spot along the road between Senjojiki and Sandanbeki Cliffs. You can not only taste beer made with local waters straight from the factory, but also try food from their popular menu including ham and sausage made by German brewer Schindler, and light and fluffy omelet made from fresh local eggs. The spacious and bright interior is great for couples and families.

We had lunch & some beers here. We liked the beers so we bought some to take home with us They also sell hats, t-shirts & other small souvenirs. The restaurant may be open only during high season...

This privately-owned café in the heart of the mountains in Nakahechi Town, Tanabe City, Wakayama, operates out of a 100-year-old Japanese home. The female Osakan owner provides a warm atmosphere. Their plate lunches which use plenty of brown rice and pesticide-free vegetables, as well as their homemade bread made with natural yeast, are very popular, drawing many fans from far and wide. Their natural yeast bread is also available to take-out.

You’ll find this cafe in the hills of Shirahama Town in Nishimuro County, Wakayama Prefecture. The two-story log cabin really brings out the feel of the wood. The tables are made of zelkova wood and there’s a hearth as well, giving the interior a very homey feeling. You can see the sun set over the Pacific Ocean from the deck thanks to the cafe’s great location. You’ll feel like you’re at a resort as you enjoy their famous organic coffee and sweets made with local “Jabara” citrus fruit.

You’ll find this teahouse in the “Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings” in Yuasa Town, Arida County, Wakayama Prefecture. It was built in an old residence from around the end of the Edo period to the start of the Meiji period. The nostalgic earthen floor interior is always filled with music and has shelves with nearly 2,000 books. In addition to handmade cakes and Japanese sweets, there’s also homemade curry and rice, udon, and other popular dishes. You can bring in grilled fish and sashimi bought from the Kusuyama shop two doors down. Add them to the “rice set” that features Kinzanji miso and miso soup to create an original set meal.

This is a cafe offering Buddhist vegetarian cuisine one road off of the Keyaki main street in Shintori 3-chome, Wakayama City. Of course shunning fish and meat, they also refrain from using any vegetables with the strong smell of chive or garlic in their original Shojin cuisine. They serve yakuzen-nabe (medicinal herb hotpot), curry, cutlet and rice bowl with sauce, pasta and sandwiches, as well as handmade sweets such as cakes without milk or eggs, and Snowflake Ice using Taiwanese shaved ice.

"This cafe is in a refurbished lacquer artisan's town house from the Edo period. Their meals come served in the lacquerware you'd expect from a town where it was a major industry. Their dark black beef “Kuroe Curry"" is named after the area and gets its distinctive curry powder from a blend of bamboo charcoal and budo-sansho Japanese pepper from Kainan City and Kimino Town. They use wild rice. They also sell lacquerware, display it in their gallery, and hold Negoro lacquerware polishing workshops."
