Kyoto Prefecture Kyoto City Shimogyo-ku Nishikiya-machi District Shijyo Kameru Makamachi 95
A venerable café founded in 1948 located a one-minute walk from Kawaramachi Station. Famous for its connection to the painter Seiji Togo, the café sign and interior is decorated with his paintings. The café’s renowned jelly punch, five different colors of jelly floating in Japanese cider soda, is refreshing to the eye as well as the body. Many customers come for this beverage alone and it can sell out in hours after the café opens.

Salon de thé François is a stylish Western-style construction accessible on foot walking south along the Takasegawa River from Kawaramachi Station. The interior is the work of founder Tateno Shoichi, and feels just like the hall of a luxury ship. From its establishment in 1934 it has been used a place for liberal-minded people to interact, and in 2003 it was designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The coffee is the Vienna type full of fresh cream. There is also a great selection of Western sweets that go well with the coffee.

I always wanted to go to this cafe, but I found one time visit was enogh for me. Even though retro uniform and unique building was very interesting and kawaii, it was far from a relaxed place...

This coffee shop located in Kiyomizu, the center of sightseeing in Kyoto. The appearance of the shop using tile on the roof is traditional Japanese architecture, but the inside has a retro Western style with high ceilings. The Japanese and Western calm atmosphere attracts many people. Inoda coffee’s original blended coffee such as “Arabian pearl” and “Tiara blend” are served. In addition you can order special cakes, sandwiches and spaghetti. Your favorite tasting coffee beans are available as souvenirs.

Kyoto Pref. Kyoto City Nakagyo-ku Oshikojidori
This classical coffee shop was inherited by the owner after 50 years of business and the name was changed to the present. The menu includes carefully selected coffee, as well as nostalgic Neapolitan tomato sauce spaghetti served on an iron plate and Bolognese meat sauce spaghetti. The most eye-catching item on the menu is the “Corona omelet sandwich” inherited from the ex-owner of the shop used to be named Café Corona. This is a fluffy thick omelet sandwiched between thin pieces of bread. It is a popular dish featured in magazines and on TV programs.

Nice place with great lunch sets! Very tasty! The curry with rice was nice and spicey and their sandwiches are amazing!

This is a Japanese sweets café that blends into the cityscape of Kyoto Gion. A popular item on the menu is elegant shaved ice using Kyoto natural ice named Awayuki. Guests can leisurely enjoy the aroma of tea such as Hojicha and Matcha complimenting the food.

Very-very expensive for what you got for your money. Charge per person is 1000. Than you pay the same price for drink as you are in New York Bar in Tokyo. A big piece of ice and very little volume of...

This small café, with an eye-catching fashionable retro exterior, passed down from grandmother to grandchild, is located a 15 minute walk from Keihan Jingu Marutamachi Station. Although the inside of the shop is unified with antique style western furniture, it blends in with the atmosphere of ancient city of Kyoto. The mild taste of the tarte tatin has been popular since opening in 1971. The confectionery full of apples has also been honored by the local Tarte Tatin Association. A large drink menu is also available, and visitors can spend a relaxing time at the café.

We had two coffees and a (very) small piece of cake each (opera and tarte tatin). Although tasty the check was ¥2,100 which seems ambitious. Quite a nice setting though.

This café is a five minute walk from the city bus stop Kinrin Shako Mae. The café makes use of an old-fashioned Japanese-style house unchanged and the seating is on the floor. While relaxing and sitting on the floor customers can overlook the Japanese-style garden and experience the feel of Kyoto. The cappuccino featured on their logo is popular. Matcha cappuccino and green tea ice cream, “Yojiya set” consisting of matcha (powdered green tea) cappuccino and ice cream, as well as an original ‘monaka set’ (sweet bean paste filled wafer) is limited to the Ginkakuji shop. In addition, the café serves cute round sushi balls that will also conjure up a feeling of Japan. There are also second floor seats where you can enjoy a seasonal ‘bento’ lunch box meal.

Loved this cafe. We had to leave our shoes in the cubbies at the entrance. We were led up stairs ---narrow stairs to a table. Tatami mat seating, but the view of the back gardens was very nice. I...

A venerable café with an old-fashioned brick exterior located a two-minute walk from Shichijo Station. Famed for its stuffed toasted sandwiches, the café is visited by large numbers of locals and tourists alike. One of the shop’s most popular menu items is its “mixed toast,” a sandwich of fluffy eggs and vegetables. The “wafu toast” is another popular menu choice uniquely Kyoto-esque in style and contains a thick dashi-maki omelet, nori, and bonito. Here patrons can enjoy an elegant morning with a cup of siphon-drip coffee.

We had breakfast here, and enjoyed ourselves. Good iced coffee, good service, English menu available.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
