  • Rakumama Kobo Royal Mery

    Kyoto Kyotango-shi Aminocho Hamazume 46
This shop sells delicious, high-quality, and completely raw honey from its own apiary. In addition to honey, it also sells gelato and soft-serve ice cream. Their most popular item is their natural honey soft-serve ice cream, which features soft-serve ice cream made from fresh local milk topped with honey still in the comb. We recommend their pure polyfloral honey, which is produced with great care at the shop's apiary in Kyotango, as a souvenir.

This coffee shop first opened in 1986. It's believed to have been Japan's first entirely non-smoking restaurant. Their tables and chairs were designed over 100 years prior by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto. Most of the flowers decorating the tables are raised on-site. During the winter they have a heater for guests to enjoy. We recommend the cake set with includes either coffee or black tea.

I was wandering around and happened upon this place. It’s a little out of the way from the bamboo forest but it’s very cute. I ordered the pizza and coffee since I wasn’t sure where else to eat...

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Ukyo-ku
A cafe located between Omuro Ninnaji Temple and Myoshinji Temple. Their menu is a relaxed affair that's easy on the body and very popular. They use non GMO soybeans and an antioxidant oil that prevents heartburn. They offer two different lunch plate options, one with grated yam and the other with okara soy pulp croquettes, both of which come with five grain rice. Their side dish menu includes tofu skin and tofu and they also offer daily cakes and drinks.

Popular menu items are their spaghetti and curry lunch plates that let you choose how much pasta or rice you prefer. Also popular are their homemade cream puffs and their combo menu options which come with drinks are expansive.

We stopped here by accident really. Heading to Ninna-Ji and needed some lunch before. What a quirky place. Jam packed with memorabilia from all sorts and places, eras, styles. You have to go to the...

A famous coffee shop that still uses the traditional cotton-flannel filter dripping method for brewing coffee that they have since their founding. This shop has a lot of long-term fans and isn't just known for their impressive coffee. Their Kyoto Breakfast will remind you of a hotel breakfast and its elegance and volume is an indispensable part of your morning during a trip to Kyoto. Come spend a moment of luxury in the high-class relaxed retro-modern atmosphere of the shop.

Really enjoyed coffee and French toast. Would definitely go again and recommend to others. A little pricey though.

A chocolate shop famous for it's melt in the mouth texture unlike anything you've ever tasted before. Come enjoy a variety of drinks that blend the flavors of natural chocolate in a shop whose interior overflows with the elegance of Kyoto. It's a small cute shop operating as a cafe space in a classic Kyoto house located near Heian Shrine.

This Kyoto cafe opened in 1990 and serves authentic New York cheesecakes. Their main offering is thick, creamy, New York cheesecake. It has an elegant flavor and is made from family recipes of owner Charles Rocher with top quality healthy ingredients. The crunch of the graham cracker crust pairs perfectly with the creaminess of the cake. Cheesecakes can be delivered as gifts nationwide. This cafe located about a 10-minute walk from Jingu-Marutamachi Station is notable for its warm exterior, which blends in the surrounding residential area. Guests can enjoy home-roasted coffee in its expansive interior, which features the warmth of wood. Their coffee strikes a nice balance between a refreshing bitterness and sweetness that can be enjoyed even by those who are not coffee drinkers. The cafe's daily lunches come with a choice of Chinese tea such as jasmine, pu'er, or litchi tea. It is also open until relatively late at night. Many customers can be seen enjoying the cafe's food, which includes omelet rice and curry rice, as well as sweets and alcoholic drinks well into the evening.

A mountain coffee shop where you can enjoy authentic fresh seafood cuisine, just a short walk from the Oharano-Shogakkou-Mae bus stop. The shop owners travel and buy tuna from the Kyoto City Central Market before preparing it themselves, allowing you to experience the freshest seafood. A popular menu item is their seafood rice bowl, loaded with so much tuna, squid, sweet shrimp, salted roe, and yellowtail that you can't even see the rice. Also popular is their Gibasa Meal which uses Akamoku seaweed to great visual effect. As a coffee shop they also serve items like cinnamon toast, rich blended coffee, red bean soup, and matcha green tea.

This teahouse offers traditional Korean herbal tea and home cooking. It is located just down an alley in Sanjo Karasuma a three-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Station on the Karasuma Line. The teahouse is located on the renovated first floor of Kondaya Genbey, a 280 year-old obi (kimono sash) wholesaler. The teahouse's interior, which is finished with fabric dyed the traditional Korean way using astringent persimmon juice, Korean furniture, and Korean accessories, will have you feeling like you have been whisked away to Korea. Guests can enjoy items such as their yakuzen (meals as dietary therapy based on traditional Chinese medicine) cakes and yakbap. Yakbap is a sweet Korean dish of the glutinous rice steamed together with chestnuts, jujubes, and pine nuts. No Korea celebration is complete without is serving of this filling and enjoyably chewy dish.

This charming Korean themed tea house was right across from our hotel. We were so happy we went inside and had lunch. The furnishings inside were exquisite, the tea delicious and so was the Bibimbap...

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Teramachi
"This retro cafe is a place where people can encounter cats and curios. It is located about a five-minute walk from Kyoto Shiyakusho-mae Station in an alley between Shinkyogoku Street and Teramachi Street. Look for the black sign with the word ""coffee"" in Chinese characters. The interior of the cafe is so relaxed and quiet you will have a hard time believing you are in a business district. The cafe is filled with light fixtures, furniture, tableware, dolls, and other antiques from as far back as the late 1800s. The coffee served at the first-floor cafe and bar has a pronounced sourness that makes it well suited for cafe au lait. The second floor is a rental gallery used as a venue for a variety of events including concerts and exhibitions. Whether the cafe's impish cat comes out to play depends on her ever-changing mood, however!"

"This cake shop is proud of their luxurious fruit sandwich. The sandwich uses seasonal fruit like peach, strawberry, mangoes and kiwi. The fruit isn't diced finely, giving the sandwich a full, satisfying feel. The bright interior is outfitted with desks and tables for eating in-shop. Their cakes, made on the motto of ""Mildly flavored cake you'll never get tired of, just like mother made,"" is popular with customers of all ages and genders."

This cafe in a classroom of the former Meirin elementary school, closed in 1993, is about five minutes' walk from subway Shijo Station. The more than 80-year-old building is valued as a cultural property, with an exterior patterned after a yamaboko parade float, and a Spanish-style interior. The space combines Kyoto-style atmosphere and modernity, and the menu offers old-fashioned Spaghetti Napolitano, and filling clubhouse sandwiches. There is a sunny terrace for nostalgia-filled mealtimes.

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Kamikawaracho
"This Japanese-style cafe was opened with the hope that people casually enjoy matcha green tea the same way they do with coffee or black tea. The name is a portmanteau of the name of the owner, Chanoyu master Randy Channell Soei, and Hotei, one of the Lucky Seven Gods. Guests can enjoy carefully crafted matcha tea inside the renovated traditional townhouse, which was originally built in 1910. The decor of the relaxing ""Taisho Romance meets Art Deco"" interior gives it a certain nostalgic quality that could be described like a visit to grandma's house. Guests can enjoy smoothies, lattes made, cheesecakes, roll cakes and other items all featuring matcha tea prepared by the owner and a tea farmer."

Kyoto Kyoto-shi Nakagyo-ku Takeyacho Dori Horikawa Higashi Iru Nishitakeyacho 529
"This cafe was created by an interior designer with the hope that more people would take a long look at the furniture he produces. The cafe is located on the second floor of the company's office building a short distance from Nijo Castle, a World Heritage Site. The third floor of the building serves as a gallery. The cafe's simple yet attractive interior is coordinated with a square and rectangular shapes. It is especially popular for its authentic curries, which transcend the level of cafe food. These fun dishes features the unique visual of a serving of rice curry topped with a boiled egg ""floating"" in the curry."

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku Gionmachiminamigawa 570-8
This cafe is inside a Kyoto machiya house that has been passed down for four generations. The shop offers a truly Japanese experience as you remove your shoes at the door, step into their floor-seating room and gaze out on the small inner garden while you enjoy their luxurious sweet treats. Their most popular dish is the Tofu Matcha Cheesecake, made without any eggs, milk, butter or other dairy products. They replace the cheese with tofu to create a mellow, creamy half-baked cheesecake delicacy. It has earned high marks not only from those suffering from food allergies, but the calorie-conscious and those who prefer less-sweet treats as well. In the evening the cafe becomes a home bar that is not open to first time customers.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
