This long-standing coffee shop was founded in 1951.The shop's interior is well maintained and has a homey, old fashioned atmosphere. They carefully brew their drip coffee cup-by-cup as they always have, in the style of their founder. Most of the sweets available to go with their coffee are homemade, including custard, hojicha pudding, and cream puffs. Their cheesecake has been popular since they first opened.

Enjoyed my time at Coffee Don! Staff were very friendly and they served great coffee and cheesecake. Loved the interiors as well - its a small cafe with soft jazz music playing in the...

"This is a Japanese and Western sweets store that makes and sells kurikinton (pureed sweet chestnuts), a fall time treat that has long been loved by all kinds of cultured people such as travelers, waka poets and haiku poets visiting the Nakasendo post town. They use a brand chestnut ""Choicest Ena Chestnuts"" grown by local contract farmers, and have been making sweets that adapt to the trends and needs of the age. To make their most popular sweet ""Kurikinton,"" a prided masterpiece, carefully selected chestnuts are steamed with a little bit of sugar, and are then squeezed out carefully one by one. It is a local confectionery with a fun simple texture that will warm you from the inside. ""Four Season Kurikinton"" that reflect the colors of the four seasons, and ""Yamamatayama,"" a grilled manju (steamed cake) with chunky azuki bean paste inside are also popular."

Ichinomachi café is located in a historic merchant’s house in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. The fascinating interior décor and mellow jazz background music combine to create a relaxed ambience, making this a great place to drop in for a break while you are wandering around the town. Besides the special coffees which are changed every week, other popular items on the menu include rich curries featuring Hida beef and locally-grown vegetables, and freshly-baked melon bread.

We went here this afternoon for a coffee break and were so pleased! Matcha Latte was delicious and so were the homemade cherryblossom cheesecake, scones & melon pan. The cafe is very cute and staff...

A bakery and café standing in the midst of a quiet, forested area a 10 minute drive from the Tajimi Interchange on the Chuo Expressway. Designed around the concept of a fairy tale for adults, the establishment offers breads made with an emphasis on texture, as well as food and drinks. The establishment’s “Premium Morning” breakfast, which comes with a variety of bite-sized delights, is only served on Saturdays and Sundays. A café located right next to Takayama Station on the JR Takayama Main Line. The coffee shop was also famously operated by the family of Japanese celebrity Michiko Shimizu and today, the café is managed by her younger brother. The café is filled with antique furniture and timepieces, and here customers can enjoy a relaxing meal enwrapped in the establishment’s old-fashioned atmosphere and the jazz flowing over the stereo. The café is open from 7:30 a.m. and serves toast and sandwich breakfast set meals. The seasonal fresh fruit juices and cakes created by Michiko (who worked as a pastry chef) are also recommended.

We stopped here for a snack after arriving in Takayama by train. It is a friendly and comfortable place a few yards from the station. We had bagels and chiffon cake (light sponge cake) with tea...

A hideaway-style café located in the Oita Shuzo brewery building, which was constructed over 150 years ago. The café’s signature item is its soufflé roll, a roll cake which is flavored differently and topped with different things depending on the time of year—for example, in February, it’s topped with strawberry ice cream, while in November is topped with caramel and a broiled banana. The shop’s handmade warabimochi bracken starch dumplings, served in summer, are so popular they sell out by the early afternoon. One of the most charming things about the café is its many seasonal only items, such as the Hida apple crumble, only offered in fall and winter, which is particularly popular with women. The café also sells Japanese knickknacks.

Such a lovely cafe to sit in and have a cup of tea. We didn’t try anything on the menu but it looked nice, seemed to be traditional Japanese desserts. We just had a cuppa each but the atmosphere...

A cafe and gallery on the grounds of Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine. Attached to a Hida pottery shop, the cappuccino-loving senior couple who runs this cafe serves some great coffee. Their carefully hand-dripped java is nicely bitter with a pleasant flavor. They also sell items like affogato, sweet vanilla ice cream drizzled with bitter espresso, and cafe frappe, perfect for hot summers. Many tourists stop here for a break while visiting Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine or the Takayama Matsuri Yatai Kaikan.

Really welcoming family-run cafe where you can get excellent coffee in a beautiful setting. It is also a gallery featuring lovely craft ceramics, some made by the owners’ son. Well worth a stop...

This cafe in Hida is a renovated traditional 's machiya house. The windows have finely latticed shutters, and you can look out at Hida's old townscape and passing rickshaws through the latticework. Drinks include coffee, matcha green tea, Japanese tea, and more. You can get gelatinous warabi mochi sweets to go with the matcha and Japanese tea. They also offer other desserts like their unusual Yukidoke White Parfait that you pour amazake sweet rice drink over before eating.

This cafe inside a chic warehouse with white walls is located a short walk in the direction of Sanmachi-dori Street from JR Takayama Station in Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Their finest coffee made with a stone mill uses only award-winning charcoal-roasted coffee beans from South America and is very popular. Their chappuccino, matcha tea finished with cappuccino, is a wonderful sight for the eyes with its beautiful green color dazzling in the white cup. The juice made with Hida peaches and melons is also rich and filled with sweetness. For dessert, they have various Japanese and western-style selections including black currant ice cream and kudzu starch noodles.

Located amidst the Takayama City Sanmachi Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings, old-style streetscape in Kami-sannomachi, Hida-takayama City, Chanome is a modern Japanese café. It is based on the concept of serving items made from the finest ingredients at a reasonable price. An especially popular item is the soft-serve ice cream made exclusively with 100% high-grade matcha tea, ground in the stone mortar near the entrance to the shop. The bite-sized Taiyaki (waffle-like confections filled with bean jam) come in five flavors and are perfect for either eating inside the café or while walking around town. In the summer, the café sells Maruppo Mikan, frozen mikan (Mandarin oranges) on a chopstick skewer.

This Japanese-style cafe uses a 180 year-old machiya (traditional townhouse) and is located in Hida Takayama, an area with an old townscape that is an important traditional architecture preservation district. The interior has high ceilings, and is decorated with the prints of local artists. You can drink coffee while gazing at the townscape through the latticework from the second floor seating for a touch of elegance. Their popular offerings include homemade zenzai (sweet red bean soup) using large Tokachi-grown red beans that are carefully boiled, cream anmitsu (small cubes of “Kanten” agar jelly and sweet rice dumplings topped with ice cream), and their snack set with sweet red bean toast and a drink. They also sell postcards with woodblock prints.

We were a party of 4 people but only 3 of us wanted something to drink. The bar was emty but We were forced to pay 200 yen for the person that didn’t want to have anything. Is this legal?

A café and cake shop located in the Town of Udatsu Roofing sprawling northwest of Nagaragawa Railway Minoshi Station. Operating out of an old-fashioned townhome, the shop still retains its classic townhome exterior, including a huge sign on the second story from when the building operated as a greengrocer. The establishment’s most popular confection is the “Momodama”, a juicy sweet consisting of a skinned and pitted peach filled with custard and covered with a framboise sauce. The establishment also offers a variety of other popular, not overly sweet confections which maximize the flavors of the ingredients used to make them, including custards and cakes topped with an abundance of fresh fruit.

This confectionery store is a gem in Mino City’s historical street. I didn’t know this place but I happened to visit here and bought a box of chocolates . 2 weeks later I came here again because I...

A bakery and café owned and operated by Fuji Baking Retail Store, a large bread company. The shop’s name means “artisan” in Italian. As its name implies, the shop takes pride in breads baked with loving care by baking artisans. Particularly recommended are the shop’s French breads baked in a brick oven. Here you’ll find an array of select breads, such as baguettes crafted to maximize the flavor of the wheat flour used; and the “Levain Campagne,” made with French flour and stone milled whole wheat flour. Customers can also enjoy fresh-baked bread on the spot in the bakery’s café area.

This art museum uses a machiya (traditional wooden townhouse) in Hida-Furukawa, and is located a five-minute walk from Hida-Furukawa Station. The museum is the shoin style of traditional Japanese residential architecture that exemplifies the skills of Hida's craftsman, and exhibits Japanese paintings from artists such as Taikan Yokoyama and Gyokudo Kawai, and cultural exhibits such as Koimari from the 17th to the 19th century, and Daimyo Hanami Shigeshi from the 18th to the 19th century. There is even a cafe where you can enjoy special sweets, coffee and beef stew while you relax in front of a Japanese traditional garden. The museum is so well integrated into the city landscape that it is almost unnoticeable at first glance, and has won the Scenery Design Award.

A visit to Hineno is exquisite and divine! Not to be missed. Try to sit by the garden window. I recommend trying both the cheesecake and the scone.

Sabo Tomiya is a Japanese-style café run by the venerable Japanese-style confectionary Tomiya and housed in a remodeled old farmhouse that dates from the end of the Edo Period (1615-1868). One of their recommended menu items is Cream Shiratama Zenzai, made from perfectly simmered azuki beans, fluffy and chewy handmade rice dumplings, and ice cream. In the summer, Sabo Tomiya serves a popular Warabi Kori, made of bracken mochi dusted with fragrant roasted soy flour, on a base of dark brown sugar over shaved ice with sweetened adzuki beans hidden inside, all the ingredients blending in perfect harmony. Other traditional Japanese confections are also available to purchase, and Tomiya’s unique Cream Warabi Daifuku make an excellent souvenir.

A café operating out of the central room of a residence which once belonged to the Saito family in Gujo City which has been designated a Cultural Property. Like the surrounding Saito Museum, works of art collected by the family over generations are displayed in the café, and, in addition to the building itself and the scenery provided by the inner garden, visitors can take in the unique charms of Japan. The matcha powdered green tea used to create the café’s beverages is ordered from Ippodo Tea in Kyoto, a company established in 1717. Customers can also enjoy fresh Japanese sweets and soybean snacks with their drink. Other menu selections include anmitsu sweet beans and fruit in syrup, zenzai sweet adzuki bean soup, and warabimochi bracken starch dumplings. The café also sells Japanese items perfect for taking home as a souvenir like incense and nioibukuro scent bags.

This cafe opened in 1969 and is located on Shinmachi-dori Street in the center of Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture. The antique furnishings and walls with tile and plaster create a unique atmosphere. They specially-select raw beans, and provide multiple kinds of coffee roasted in-house with Gujo’s famous water. Some of their popular items include the “moca pair” with coffee jelly and ice cream topped with lots of chocolate sauce and heavy cream, the filling strawberry parfait available only during certain seasons, and “matcha anmitsu” (syrup-covered bean paste and fruit) with melty matcha green tea powder. In addition, their hayashi rice (hashed beef rice) and curry with Hida beef that is prepared for a week are highly recommended.

This cafe is located right next to Toson Memorial Museum, and also sells souvenirs. Shimazaki Toson is said to have named the store “Yomogiya,” and it is in a renovation kominka (old house) with cloisters and a characteristically retro exterior. The inside of the shop is decorated with items used by Toson. Its specialty is warabi-mochi (brack starch cakes covered in sweet soybean powder), and it is served as part of a set menu with one of three toppings (brown sugar syrup, roasted soybean flour and chunky adzuki red bean paste) and a drink. The shiratama zenzai (red bean soup with pounded rice dumplings) is also highly recommended, and you can choose the serving temperature. They are offer the drink called “Hatsukoi Ringo Juice” using apples from Magome. In addition, you can purchase things such as coffee cups, spoons and fans as souvenirs.
