A long-standing Izumo soba restaurant founded at the end of the Edo period. This famous restaurant has served several emperors starting with Emperor Taisho. The restaurant’s legendary soba, flavorful and superb in texture, is made with local ingredients, and the buckwheat is ground with the husk using a stone mortar. The restaurant hand makes its soba noodles twice a day, ensuring diners can enjoy fresh made, fresh cooked soba whenever they visit. One of the most popular items on the menu is the warigo soba, soba noodles served with a three tier wooden warigo lunch box, a style characteristic of Izumo soba. The restaurant’s set meal options and the soba course, only offered here at the honten flagship location, are also well reviewed. The nearest station is Izumoshi Station.

When in Izumo, you must try soba. I did just that, I came here later in the evening and there was a waiting list, which can be a good thing, the wait wasnt long. My wife and I both ordered the cold...

Enjoy Izumo soba dishes in the relaxed atmosphere of the refurbished Japanese-style room of a private house which opened in 2014 on the shrine path to the west of Izumo Taisha Shrine. The high quality domestically grown stone milled buckwheat flour is made into soba noodles carefully by hand every morning. The soba is rich in flavor and very popular. Recommended dishes include the tororo grated yam soba and soba with duck and seasonal vegetables.

"This restaurant serves Okayama style udon noodles which are soft on the inside and slippery on the outside, and Izumo soba noodles made from buckwheat ground in a stone mill. The restaurant has been providing ""Kioke Soy Sauce"", ""Izumo Local Sake"" and handmade additive-free udon and soba for generations. The menu also offers rice bowls with various toppings and a meal set. The rice cooked with vegetables that comes with the set is also popular."

This is a buckwheat soba restaurant that specializes in making noodles with 100 percent milled buckwheat without any binding agent. At this specialty restaurant, you can enjoy the flavor of the Izumo soba. Although the restaurant does have set opening hours, it closes as soon as the soba is sold out, so it is recommended to visit earlier in the day.

A renowned Izumo soba restaurant located close to the front gate of the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine a five minute walk from Izumotaisha-mae Station. The restaurant was originally established as a small sweet shop serving shrine visitors, so that it began to serve soba noodles. The restaurant’s vaunted noodles are handmade every morning using a stone mortar to grind flower from select domestic gen-soba buckwheat. Tanakaya’s soba is notable for its firm body, chewy texture, and abundant flavor, and they go perfectly with the restaurant’s rich broth made from round herring stock and a locally produced soy sauce. Two of the most popular items on the menu are the sanshoku warigo, soba noodles with three different toppings; and the simple zaru soba, plain noodles served over a bamboo draining basket.

Kaneya is a soba restaurant founded in 1929 in Taisha Town, Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture. The restaurant is famous for donating its soba to the people at the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine festival. With its good old, simple, private house-like appearance, the store is loved by many well known people with lots of autographs decorating the walls of the restaurant. Kaneya offers authentic Izumo soba, freshly ground, freshly kneaded, and freshly boiled. Their most popular dish is the sanshoku-wariko, with three toppings on a bowl of soba noodles. The noodle’s broth with the sweet flavors of urume iwashi (sardines) and konbu seaweed coming through is particularly well liked.

Heiwa Soba is an Izumo Soba noodles restaurant that serves hand-made noodles made using locally-grown brown buckwheat; the buckwheat flour used to make the noodles contains some buckwheat chaff, which helps to give the noodles an especially rich flavor and dark coloration. Since the restaurant was founded in 1950, it has maintained a consistent emphasis on the quality of its hand-made Soba noodles, which are among the Izumo region’s most famous local specialties; Heiwa Soba is so popular that it sometimes has to close early because it has run out of noodles. Besides Warigo Soba (Soba noodles served in three tires of round lacquerware), Yamakake Soba (Soba noodles topped with grated yam) and Zaru Soba (Soba noodles served on a bamboo draining basket with dipping sauce), Heiwa Soba also serves Don (rice bowl) dishes and set meals. Heiwa Soba is located around 15 minutes’ walk from Izumotaisha-mae Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway line.

Continuing for over 200 years since the late Edo period, Arakiya is the Izumo soba shop with the longest history. It is located in a quiet residential area and features a folksy, relaxed interior. Carefully chosen local Izumo soba flour is placed in a stone mill, quality well water is added, and round herring dashi (soup stock) is used to create the elegant taste. While soba supplies last. Approximately 10 minutes on foot from Taisha Station on the Ichibata Electric Railway.

At the Ippuku Taisha Shinmon-dori Store, you can enjoy firm handmade soba with a secret, mellow dashi (stock). The original soba sweets available at the adjacent café are also quite popular. You can bring a pet along if you use terrace seating. A lot of souvenirs are available too, so this place is always lively. The most popular souvenir is “sobakarinto.” The new shichimi (seven spice) flavor offers a moderate sweetness with a sharp spicy aftertaste. One minute on foot from Izumotaisha-mae Station on Ichibata Electric Railways.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
