The workshop continues to make ""Izumo magatama"" used when the ""Izumo Kokuzo"" of the Izumo Taisha Grand Shrine would conduct rituals at the imperial palace for new emperors. It is in the country's leading production area for beads that has produced large quantities of magatama and beads since ancient times. The mysterious shape and deep, beautiful color still fascinate people, and make them feel like they have a mysterious spiritual power. It is located about a four-minute drive from JR Nogi Station, and continues to produce traditional Fujina ware and pottery with modern designs that blend in with modern life. It once worked on tea utensils favored by Fumai-ko, the clan leader who was a master of the tea ceremony. This facility is near the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum, and sells indigo dyed goods as well as offering activities allowing you to make your own. The style is characterized by precise geometric patterns marked by stark contrast in the blue dyeing (using naturally fermented indigo liquid), with the threads woven to bring out the patterns with exactness. At this workshop, you can use rubber bands to create your own design in their Dyeing Activity, resulting in a one-of-a-kind piece for the cost of a single coin!

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
