This cafe, 500 meters from Roadside Station Sugo on National Route 57, operates out of an inviting, hand built wooden cottage standing amidst rural highland scenery. Customers can relax while enjoying acoustic music and the surrounding trees and wildflowers. All of the cafe's beans are roasted fresh in-house and by hand using a mesh held over a charcoal fire. The restaurant's meals, made with organic vegetables and local ingredients, are also acclaimed and include things like a shrimp and seasonal vegetable doria, and hot open faced sandwiches. The cafe is open from 10:00 a.m to sundown. The cafe also sells knickknacks.

This Japanese-style cafe, a 10-minute walk from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, adjoins Tajimaya Roho, a longstanding Japanese confectionary shop established in 1804. Operating out of a remodeled 100-year-old merchant home, here customers can enjoy matcha, sencha, and hojicha green teas along with such celebrated Tajimaya Roho confections as Kojo no Tsuki and Mikasano. The cafe's sweets, such as its zenzai sweet azuki bean soup and shiratama rice flour dumplings, are particularly popular, as is its okowa rice made with Chikuden chestnuts and other local ingredients. The cafe's cold brew coffee, made with famous Taketa spring water, is also recommended. Depending on when you visit, you might be able to enjoy fresh-baked Mikasano.

"This gallery and cafe, a five-minute walk from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, operates out of a remodeled public bathhouse which was in use up to 1978. Tubs, faucets, and other bathhouse accoutrements have been left as-is in the first floor dining space, which is still divided into ""men's"" and ""women's"" ""bathing"" areas. Men and women, however, are free to eat and sit down in either area. The cafe's seasonal small dish set meal is particularly popular and comes with homemade udon noodles and various small side dishes made with fresh vegetables. A greengrocer operates right next door, and accordingly the cafe's fresh vegetable juices are also recommended. The second floor is used as a gallery."

This cafe, surrounded by the lush natural beauty of Bungo Ono City's Ogata-machi district, is operated by a husband and wife team with experience working respectively as a baker and patissier. The cafe sells cakes and breads fastidiously made primarily from domestic and organic ingredients. Another nice thing about the establishment is that you can enjoy a meal here along with the surrounding lush scenery. Via the cafe's lunch meals and beverages, customers can fully savor the area's unique local flavors. The cafe also holds bread making classes twice a month. Held with small class sizes, there are three different courses for everyone from beginners to advanced bakers.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
