"This public bathhouse, which belongs to the Omaru Ryokan inn, can be reached by crossing the Seri River from the Nagayuyamawakisansaro Intersection and heading east a short distance. The bathhouse may be used by non-guests and is additionally adjoined by an art museum dedicated to artists connected to Nagayu Onsen such as Rikizo Takata and Yasunari Kawabata. Customers can enjoy indoor and outdoor baths filled with water from two different hot springs - a so-called ""ramune"" hot spring whose waters are said to treat high blood pressure and chronic skin diseases; and a hydrogen carbonate spring whose waters are said to treat cuts and burns. There's also a hot spring water drinking fountain, and drinking a suitable amount of this spring water is said to provide a variety of benefits."

The temperature of this spa is 32 degree celsius. A bit low compared to usual hot springs. Warm seasons will be better to visit here than winter. The bubble spa is outside, because of CO2 generated...

This day-use hot spring bathhouse, a 45-minute drive from the Mitsuyoshi Interchange and 50 minutes from the Yufuin Interchange, is located in the Nagayu Onsen hot spring district centering on the Seri River. If you head northeast from the Tenman Bridge, the bathhouse will be visible on the right-hand side. The bathhouse was established in 1781 through the efforts of residents living in what was then Oka Domain. The bathhouse' baths are filled with the waters of one of three different source springs, the waters of two of which contain carbon dioxide. Bathing in their waters is said to treat such ailments as cuts, chronic digestive diseases, and hemorrhoids, while drinking them is said to treat diabetes and gout. Another nice thing about the bathhouse is that it is open from 6:00 a.m., and enjoying a nice, long bath and resting in the bathhouse' free rest lounge is particularly recommended.

"This day-use hot spring, a 20-minute drive from JR Bungo-Taketa Station, is surrounded by quiet rural scenery. The bathhouse' vaunted ""drinkable hot spring water"" is said to be good for the digestive tract, and there is a drinking fountain in front of the entrance which anyone can use to drink this water. In addition to an outdoor bath with a beautiful garden and a large indoor bath, the bathhouse has a private family bath which is designed to be easy to use even for those with disabilities, and customers can take a relaxing soak in lukewarm waters which will warm them to the very core. The slightly yellowish, tasteless and odorless waters of the bathhouse' hydrogen carbonate spring are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, and fatigue."

  • Nagayu Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Oita Taketa-shi Naoirimachi Nagayu 8043-1
A hot spring district situated on a hill at the foot of Mt. Kuju in Oita Prefecture. The area's hot springs contain abundant quantities of carbon dioxide gas and in 2007 the district self-proclaimed itself as having the most highly carbonated springs in the country. Also purporting to have some of the most carbonated hot springs in the world, the area's waters are said to treat joint pain, muscle soreness, and chronic digestive diseases, in addition to aiding recovery from fatigue. The bubbles in the water cover the surface of the body, creating an insulating effect which further enhances the heat retaining properties of the water itself. In addition, these same waters also cause carbon dioxide levels in the blood to rise, resulting in a state of oxygen deficiency similar to that which occurs after intense exercise, and thus they are also said to increase one's metabolic rate and in turn promote weight loss. Some of Japan's most celebrated authors, such as Yasunari Kawabata and Akiko Yosano, loved this hot spring district, and monuments inscribed with their words dot the town.

Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
