  • Kusatsu Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Gunma Agatsuma-gun Kusatsumachi Kusatsu
A hot spring area counted as one of Japan’s three most famous. With over 100 source springs, the area generates some 32 thousand liters of natural hot spring water every minute, the greatest production volume in Japan. Since ancient times, the area has flourished as a therapeutic spa, and unique, long-standing traditions remain deeply rooted here, such as the custom of “yumomi,” the cooling of extremely hot spring waters by agitating them with thick wooden planks; and “jikan-yu” timed bathing, a practice distinct to Kusatsu which emerged in the late Edo period. The area’s primarily acidic springs are known for their powerful antibacterial properties, and it is even said they will “treat any disease other than love sickness.” The area is dotted with art museums and is also known as an art town.

This hot spring inn is located 10 minutes by car from Minakami Interchange. One of the charms of the inn is that it is located at the foot of Mt. Tanigawa, and each season has its own unique beauty, such as the remaining snow on the mountain contrasted with the cherry blossoms, green leaves and autumn leaves. There is the simple alkaline hot spring, which has continued to rise since the Edo Period, and dishes made with Gunma’s seasonal ingredients and local vegetables, served with warm hospitality. It is also famous as the inn associated with Osamu Dazai, and contains a miniature Osamu Dazai gallery. Visitors can view a reproduction of the Japanese-style room Dazai stayed in, along with hot spring tickets that he actually used, as well as books and photo albums and other valuable materials.

The mid-sized inn is moderately priced and good value. Nice hot spring onsen with an indoor and outdoor bath. It was snowing and a long dip in the outside bath was a special treat. Dinner and...

This bathing facility is located in Tanigawa Onsenkyo Hot Spring Village. The facility is unusual in Japan, because it uses water from three different sources. The hot springs are simple alkaline spring water in the Fudo no Yu bath, calcium sodium sulphate chloride spring water in the Kajika no Yu bath, and simple spring water in the Hotaru no Yu bath. The large, open outdoor bath was built along the river, and visitors can enter the bath from the decking at the back of the building. There are also shops and rest facilities available inside the building.

It gets a bit crowded at peak times, but a lovely onsen in a great location. I would avoid it at 5 to 6pm though in the ski season as it gets pretty crowded.

This day-use hot springs bath resort is just a 2-minute walk from the Onogami Onsen Station. Keeping the same quality water of the former Onogami hot springs center, which drew its waters from the Onogami springs flowing from the Agatsuma River banks, this resort has been newly renovated. There is a small garden with the main bath, an outdoor bath, and a private bath in the individual rooms, creating a refined space for relaxation and healing. Containing sodium, calcium ion and mildly alkalescent, Onogami hot springs waters are gentle on the skin and thus called ‘the waters for beautiful women’. The resorts own original gel and lotion products incorporating the source waters are also sold here.

"A day trip hot spring bathhouse located a two-minute walk from JR Maebashi Station. The bathhouse' vaunted private natural sodium chloride spring wells up from directly underneath the facility. This spring, also known as the ""Netsu no Yu,"" is adjusted so that the waters are just a little on the lukewarm side. The bathhouse sells sets which include a towel and robe, etc., making it easy to stop by here without needing to bring anything. In addition to an indoor bathing area, the bathhouse's bright, open, and airy outdoor bath has a view of a beautiful courtyard area for bathers to enjoy. Other facilities include a dry sauna and steam bath, as well as a bedrock bath back you can take a relaxing soak in with a reservation made at the front reception desk."
