A famous big open-air bath at the highest point in Zao Onsen town. An open-air bath for men and women made alongside the mountain stream, with capacity for 200 people. An open construction surrounded by Zao’s nature, it is a popular spot for enjoying the hot spring or peaceful walk through the woods. The hot spring water is of the highly acidic sulfur variety, also called the “beauty maker.” It is closed from December to the following March. Take the Yamako Bus to its last stop in the “Zao Onsen” direction.

This is an open-air bath facility at the top of the onsen town with water flowing down along the stream and pouring into it. The facility is quite minimum with no washing space with showers but two...

This hot spring resort is deep in the mountains at Osawaubayu, Yonezawa City. Boasting 450-years history, you can take a bath at the stand-alone Masugataya inn that's been in the same family for 17 generations. The simple acidic sulfur hot spring water is a bluish milky white. Located about 1,300 meters above sea level in the Azuma Mountain Range, people love its open-air bath where you can absorb the beauty of the quiet valley deep in the mountains.

This is about the most remote onsen we have visited. The train service to Toge where the ryokan has a pickup service at 1340hrs is infrequent. From Toge it is a 35+mins mini-bus ride up a steep and...

There are two different source springs, high temperature and low, for the large baths, full body bath with jets, saunas, and cold water baths. This day use bath center pipes natural hot spring water “kakenagashi” style into the tubs. The water quality is acidic sulfur-containing aluminum sulfate chloride spring, and it is said to be effective in treating joint pain and skin diseases, as well as having beautifying effects on skin. The wide open outdoor baths are lit up at night to offer a magical night view of the natural scenery. The indoor baths are filled with the relaxing scent of hinoki cypress, and are popular with people coming to soak away their fatigue.

Yamagata Pref. Obanazawashi Ginzanshimbata In the ground
Located in the middle of the Ginzan Hot Spring area, Shirogane-yu is a communal bathhouse in which visitors can still sense some of the atmosphere of this establishment’s days as a therapeutic spa. The modern exterior was designed by the architect Kengo Kuma. The second floor is characterized by large windows, which create a subdued light, while the first floor has an eerie, cave-like quality. The bathtubs are small with a capacity of four persons. Due to its sulfur content, the water is cloudy, and it is extremely hot as it flows out of the spring, so people who do not like very hot baths need some time to adjust to the temperature.

Just five minutes by car from the JR Oishida Station, this day-use hot spring facility is located along the Mogami River. The main bathing area is as big as a 50-mat tatami room, where one can peacefully enjoy a leisurely bath. There are many other types of baths such as a reclining bath, waterfall bath, jet baths and a sauna. In the open-air bath, one can both feel and see the beauty of the changing seasons while bathing, and there is a neko-bath, made from the Jinengo Gama Oishidayaki ceramic, that is designed and shaped to look like a male tortoiseshell cat that is said to bring good fortune. The waters are simple spring waters (sodium, chlorides, and hydrogen carbonate spring water), said to be beneficial for muscle and joint pains, and fatigue.

This day use hot spring facility is in the plains at the foot of Mt. Haguro. The large baths feel wide open, with high ceilings and spacious construction, and there are saunas, traditional Japanese style stone outdoor baths with a view, and more facilities. The water type is sodium calcium chloride spring, which is said to be effective in recovery from fatigue and in promoting health. It's popular with tourists visiting Mt. Haguro as well as local residents on their days off.

The Shonai-style building in a bucolic setting is an affecting sight. Both a rock bath and a stone bath are available, and men and women use them on alternate days. The rock bath is filled with water from colorless, clear salt spring, while the stone bath is filled with cloudy, tea-colored water, so visitors can enjoy a different kind of bath every day, depending on their mood. Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
