    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Yamanouchimachi Hirao
    A hot spring district with a long history which records state was discovered by the great priest Gyoki in the Nara period. The area boasts such a large number of source springs and such an abundance of hot spring water that you can dig practically anywhere into the ground and soon find piping hot water bubbling up from below. In addition to hot spring hotels, there are nine public bathhouses in the area, and visitors can go on the traditional Kyu-to Meguri pilgrimage and try all nine for free to compare and contrast (limited to persons staying overnight in the district). Each of the Kyu-to Meguri bathhouses makes use of a different source spring with differing water qualities, and pilgrims can get a special tenugui hand towel stamped at each bathhouse as proof of their visit. The pilgrimage ends with a visit to the Shibutaka Yakushi Temple, which offers a sweeping view of the district, to receive one final stamp that is said to grant one's wish as well as protection from misfortune, safe childbirth and child rearing, and youth and longevity.

    Ever since this hot spring opened in 1915, it has been loved as a famous hot spring in Karuizawa, and it is a Hoshino hot spring used by literary masters such as Hakushu Kitahara, Toson Shimazaki, and Akiko Yosano. In consideration of that history it opened as a day trip hot spring facility in 2002. The natural hot springs which are overflowing with the source water are full of mineral deposits moving around, and guests can relax and forget the time there. The building has a modern Japanese style with bilateral symmetry, and is a spot where one can enjoy spacious indoor baths and a very open rotemburo open-air bath that is enveloped in nature. It is located about 15 minutes by car from the shinkansen’s Karuizawa Station.

    This famous ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) in Shirahone Onsen boasts over 100 years of history since its establishment. Visitors can enjoy the unique scenery of the season from the large outdoor bath; there is also an indoor bath and private reservable baths. All baths are continuously fed directly from a natural hot spring. The large outdoor bath is mixed sex; however, the bath’s opaque milky white waters and separate entrance for women have won it repute as being easy for women to enter compared to other mixed sex bathing facilities. Non-guests can also enjoy a day trip of bathing in the inn’s baths.

    A cloud top hot spring inn 2,000 meters above sea level with indoor baths, a lamp lit bath, and an outdoor bath commanding a view of the Japan Alps and overlooking Takamine Ravine. The outdoor bath is small, accommodating only a maximum of four people, but its highly medicinal waters, constantly replenished from a source spring kakenagashi style, will soothe away the fatigue of your journey. The inn's sulfur-containing calcium sodium magnesium hydrocarbonate spring is said to provide a variety of health benefits. Be sure to talk to the staff, who can tell you about the best way to bathe so as to improve the efficacy of the waters for your specific ailments. The inn also has an area where you can drink these waters, and doing so is said to treat diabetes, gout, liver disease, and constipation. Non-guests can only use the inn's bathhouse from 11:00 to 16:00; also note that bathhouse fees are different during winter (November 21 to April 20).

    A roadside station situated along National Route 153 in Hiraya Village, Shimoina County. The station has a shop selling local agricultural products and specialty product. The station's restaurant serves Shinshu soba noodles, goheimochi rice cake skewers, sauce-katsu rice bowls, and other local south Shinshu cuisine, as well as local liquors. In addition, the station is adjoined by the Himawarinoyu hot spring bathhouse; Himawarinoyakata hotel; and Himawari Pool, with a 25 meter water slide, and visitors can take a relaxing soak here and ease away the fatigue of their journey.

    A hot spring bathhouse standing along Prefectural Route 35 in Sanada-machi Soehi, Ueda City. The bathhouse has a garden outdoor bath which is one of the largest in northern Shinano; visitors can soak in its waters surrounded by natural beauty. The bathhouse has a full array of other amenities, including a restaurant which serves handmade, healthy dishes such as stove top cooked takigohan rice made with Special A class Koshihikari rice from Saku.

    Katakurakan is a public bath in the Kamisuwa Onsen resort in Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture. The bath, building and connecting corridor have been designated as important national cultural assets. The Katakura family, who made a fortune from the silk industry, built the bath house in 1928 for the local residents. The bath house is characteristic for its gothic-style façade. The interior of the bath house as well as the bathrooms are also made in the Western style, and you can enjoy the big marble bath and Jacuzzi hot spring, nicknamed the ‘thousand-person bath’. There is an annex building where you can enjoy an after bath rest and meal.

    An inn located 2,000 meters in Utsukushigahara Highland, this place offers meals made with char native to the surrounding springs and mountain vegetables, and it also has a large bathing area with a commanding view of the environs. Also, in the early morning, there’s a tour of the area’s amazing sites, such as the Japan Alps floating above the clouds and Mt. Fuji, and in the evening, there’s a free stargazing tour as well as other options. You can only stay for one night, but you’ll be able to enjoy Utsukushigahara’s natural scenery to the fullest.

The facility also features a dining hall, a rest area, a shop, and lodgings without meals (short rests also allowed), so you can take multiple dips in the hot springs if you wish.

    This is a day-trip onsen facility in Norikura Kogen highland in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture that was remodeled and reopened in 2013. Both the inner baths and rotemburo open-air baths allow patrons to take in the natural scenery of Mt. Norikura, and guests can enjoy the hot springs while enjoying their fill of the new green leaves in spring and the changing leaves in autumn. The warm water that is used is natural hot spring water with a milky-white color that is said to have relieved the tired body of warlord Shingen Takeda. There is also a rest area and restaurant on site, and visitors can relax here after strolling or skiing on the highland.

    A day trip hot spring bath facility located near the entrance to the Hakuba Happo inn resort area in Kitaazumi County, Nagano Prefecture. Happo no Yu opened in December 2014. One of the biggest of the five hot spring facilities in Hakuba Happo-one, from Happo no Yu’s open-air bath you can get a stunning view of Shirouma Sanzan (three main mountains of Shirouma) and the Hakuba Happo-one ski area. The facility’s baths are constantly replenished exclusively from a natural strongly alkaline hot spring. The adjoining Happo Chaya café serves famed hot spring udon noodles and Happo Farm soft serve ice cream.

    This day-trip hot spring facility is located at the foot of Mt. Nyugasa, and is a place where you can enjoy 100% natural hot springs with water flowing directly from the source. Besides indoor baths and saunas, there are eight different kinds of rotenburo (open-air baths), and you can bathe while gazing out at the natural scenery of all the seasons. With an eatery where you can have local cuisine, it is used by not only local residents but also tourists.

    A hot spring hotel located in Kamimuroga, Ueda City. The hotel's bathhouse' waters well up from a hot spring 1,500 meters below the ground-these waters are praised for beautifying and smoothing the skin. The hotel's restaurant, Sasaratei, serves soba noodles made with 100% locally-grown buckwheat flour. There's also an adjoining farm-fresh shop.

    A day trip hot spring facility located Asama Onsen, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture. The history of the facility dates back 400 years to a hot spring palace created by Ishikawa Yasunaga, lord of Matsumoto Domain. The hot spring’s simple hot spring waters are colorless and slightly alkaline. The facility’s detached open air bath makes excellent use of the surrounding nature-rich scenery and is said to have been a favorite of generations of Matsumoto Domain lords. The facility also has a large bathhouse with a cypress open-air bath and a sauna. The facility is also able to accommodate even large groups. After your bath, you can enjoy a snack or meal in the facility’s café or Japanese restaurant.

    Komakusa no Yu is a day-trip spa facility that is in the highlands of Komagane City that offers a great view of the Southern Alps (Akaishi Mountains). The indoor facilities such as the medicinal baths, jet baths, cold baths, and sauna are nice, but the open-air baths allow you to experience nature in all its grandeur. You can see the Chuo Alps (Kiso Mountains) on days where the horizon line between the sky and the Alps is beautifully clear. It’s three minutes by car from the Komagane Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, or 13 minutes on the Shirabidaira-bound bus from JR Komagane Station.

Due to its proximity to the station, the hotel is often used by Nagano tourists and business travelers.
  • Mimizuku no Yu

    This day-trip hot spring facility is located in Hakuba Village, Kita-azumi County, Nagano Prefecture. It has gained popularity because you can see Mt. Hakuba, Mt. Shakushi and Mt. Hakubayari (Hakuba's three symbolic peaks) from the rotenburo (open-air baths) with Happo Ridge in the background. You can wear off fatigue while enjoying cherry blossoms in the rotenburo (open-air bath) during the spring. There is also a shop in the facility with plenty of souvenirs.
  • Yashiki Onsen Shuseikan

    This Hot Spring is located in Shimominochi County, Nagano Prefecture. Visitors can reach it in about 90 minutes from Shiosawa-Ichiuchi Interchange on the Kan-Etsu Expressway, via National Routes 353, 117, and 405. The sulfate spring, only here around this area, is said to be effective for recovery from fatigue and rheumatism. The mineral deposits from the water are variable, and depending on the air temperature, the color of the water changes from colorless transparency to emerald green to milky white. There is also an outdoor bath where guests may view the gorge of the Nakatsugawa River. The baths are available for day use as well as for overnight guests, and the meals served here feature traditional local cuisine.
