A café operated out of a remodeled old private home with lattice doors, a tiled roof, and white walls located in Hommachi, Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture. Inside, the café retains much of the original old interior style, giving it a soothing and quiet atmosphere. A tatami mat seating area is situated just past the earthen floor of the entrance; in the inner part of a café, customers can view the elegant inner garden. The restaurant’s seasonal fruit parfaits are particularly popular—strawberry in spring, peach in summer, Japanese chestnut in fall, and more. The spicy, flavorful Miyake curry and homemade cakes are also well-reviewed.

It was late afternoon on a cold December day and we longed for a warm place to stop for some hot tea and cake. But most cafes had already closed or featured big plastic ice cream cones outside. So we...

EL GRECO is an old-fashioned café, with ivy-covered exterior and colors for all four seasons, a great place for resting your spirit. The most popular choice is the coffee and rare cheesecake with blueberry sauce combination, winning many fans who keep coming back for more. Approximately 10 minutes on foot from JR Kurashiki Station.

After time at Ohara museum, a cup of tea and a piece of traditional Japanese sponge was terrific. An older western style building, the decor inside was slightly more traditionally Japanese. Highly...

Yurin-an is a cafe in a traditional Japanese house built 100 years ago. Features like our single-board table help preserve the old-fashioned atmosphere, and their highly popular “power sweets” are rumored to bring happiness. Since there’s the chance of a queue from opening on weekends and public holidays, arriving early is a good idea. Their “Shiawase Pudding” will make you smile, and their miracle inducing “Miracle Panna Cotta” is also popular. Yurin-an is approximately 15 minutes on foot from JR Kurashiki Station.

Puding and panna cotta was cute and tasted nice. However, it is only being sold with a set drink. The zenzai was seasonal limited so I gave it a try. And OMG second bite made me headache.

A coffee and bean roasting specialty shopped founded in 1971 standing in the center of the Bikan Historical Quarter. The shop’s popular coffee is made from carefully selected beans which are further sorted in the shop, then carefully roasted and nel drip brewed. In addition to menu standards such as Kilimanjaro, customers can also enjoy daily and seasonal coffees. The shop also sells beans for home use.

The coffee shop interior is all mellow old wood, which makes it a relaxing place to have a break. The coffee itself is good, although my cappuccino was more like a vienna, with cream on top. Service...

You’ll find this gallery and cafe on the second floor of the Heisuiken boutique, which stocks delicacies from all over Japan and the world. The thick beams and solid tables give the shop interior an appealing natural feel. While the menu is spare, with select coffee varieties, ice cream, and other snacks, you can also eat items bought from the store in the cafe. The window seats offer a wonderful view of the history-filled garden and Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter townscape. The nearest station is Kurashiki Station.

This gelato shop is run by a dairy farm. The shop is marked by its freshness of flavor, created by using milk and eggs straight from the farm. In addition to their own milk, they use as many local ingredients as they can, including of course fruits and vegetables. They offer standard flavors like milk, egg, blueberry, and more. In season, they also have strawberry, peach, pione grape, dekopon orange, Senryo eggplant, and other Okayama-grown fruits. They also offer sweet treats made using gelato.

    Okayama Bizen Kagatomoto 591-1
A five-minute walk from JR Kagato Station. At this restaurant you can enjoy a healthy curry made almost entirely with vegetables and dessert. The interior is decorated with Bizen-ware pottery and paintings and the music of Mozart drifts about the room. The roux is made with lots of finely chopped vegetables letting you taste the sweetness of the vegetables through the spices. We recommend the Seafood Curry absolutely loaded with seafood from the Seto Inland Sea including shrimp, crab, and dashi broth. Their Cleopatra Curry, made with Muscat wine and jam, is also available in take-away pouches for later reheating.

Okayama Areas

around-area-map

Overshadowed by Hiroshima to the west and the Kansai region to the east, Okayama is an easy spot to miss but a nature-rich gem where the Seto Inland Sea laps at its toes and peach and grape farms complete its interior. One of Japan's Three Great Gardens, Koraku-en in Okayama city is well worth a visit before progressing to Kurashiki, where preserved wooden Edo buildings line the picturesque canal.
