Located along Kawara-machi Street, this Japanese confectioner was founded in 1899. Their famous “nadai mamemochi” features red bean jam and red peas wrapped in freshly-made mochi. It has been around since the founding, and is a standard Kyoto souvenir, popular enough to see people lining up to get some.

御所から1本西に入ったところにあるお香専門店。香初体験の友人と香炉の整え方と香の聞き方を体験するコースに参加。自宅でも出来るようにやさしく丁寧に教えてくれる。伽羅のほかに5種を聞く事もできて良かった。香りの微妙な違いに次は三種香や源氏香などの香当ても挑戦したいものだと思った。聞香で癒されたあとに、お菓子とお抹茶まで頂きほっこり。

A museum that introduces you to the ambitions of Nijima Jo, the founder of Doshisha University, and the history of the university. Their permanent exhibit focuses around six themes, the Progress of Doshisha, the Ideology of Nijima Jo, Doshisha of Today, Doshisha's Place in the World, and J. N. Harris and Doshisha. The collection has gathered nearly some 20,000 documents since the museum's founding. This includes a storage room called the Nijima Storage dedicated to nearly 6000 articles related to Nijima Jo and the founding period of the University (the contents of this storage room are kept private). The institution has long been used by Doshisha University as a location for physics and chemistry lessons. The brick built Harris Science Hall, completed in 1890, has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

A confectioner that first opened in 1953 and now has three directly managed shops and six distributors across Kyoto City. They continue to make traditional Kyoto confections while striving ever further to create better treats searching for a candy enlightenment. One of the shops stand out confections is their Famous Kyoto Unryu treat. Each is made by hand with the finest large Tanba Dainagon red beans and shaped to represent a dragon riding atop a cloud. The flavor of the red beans and the gentle mouthfeel only possible with freshly made sweets makes for an exquisite harmony. Their dried candies and confections made to resemble the changing of the seasons are a treasure to be viewed and ideal for souvenirs or gifts.

A Japanese-style confectioner that makes a limited quantity of daily treats. The owner of the shop personally travels every year to the Tanba region to ensure they use the highest quality Tanba Dainagon red beans and black beans. Their Kyoto Rakuhoku confection made with simmered Tanba Dainagon red beans offering a low-key sweetness and their Miyako-no-Tsuki confection made with carefully prepared red beans and hardened Agar can only be purchased at the Main Store.

宝泉堂本店は、住宅街の中にひっそりとある宝泉堂の本店は、うっかりすると辿り着けません。ただし素晴らしいお庭を眺めながら、素晴らしいお菓子を購入出来ます。私のおすすめは、しぼり豆丹波黒大寿です。これは、京都通が購入するお菓子です。素朴で懐かしい味がします。親戚にも評判が良いです。

A white walled storehouse with a classic Kyoto townhouse appearance. This soy sauce shop is easily marked by the large wooden signboard standing by the entrance. It's a long-standing store that has been making soy sauce with a focus on domestic ingredients and traditional tools and techniques ever since its establishment in 1879. Recommended is their Whole Soybean Twice Aged Soy Sauce in which soybeans and wheat are added to finished pure soy sauce and allowed to ferment a second time. Their two-year fermented soy sauce is perfect not just for fish or meat dishes but for any meal that you want to give a deeper flavor. Their products are sold in glass bottles to prevent a changing of flavor.

The Honda Miso main store is an old miso shop dating back from the Tenpo period and is located along Ichijo-dori Street on the west side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The famous Saikyo light-brown miso is just 5% salt—the lowest among misos—and is a great miso option for those concerned about salt intake. Up until the Edo period they focused on miso for the imperial court only, but from the Meiji period they opened to more general sales. While obstinately protecting the techniques, they have cultivated over many years, they also respond to the changes of the time and the motto “immutability and fluidity” goes into the making of miso even today.

毎回京都に来るたびに利用します。今回はお味噌以外にもお醤油やふりかけも買ってみました。やっぱり白味噌が１番好きかな〜。宿泊していたホテルに近いので便利です。

Unlike most bookstores, it stocks mostly books that might be thought of as luxury items. The shop also has a coffee bar and regularly schedules workshops related to music or books.

京都インディペンデント系書店です。店長の堀部さんは積極的にメディアにも発信されていますが、接客は控えめ。ゆっくり時間をとって棚の本と向き合ってください。観光目的というよりも自分自身の思考を整えるのに書店巡りは向いているように思います。

Kyoto Nishijin Kotaro no Su specializes in vinegar and is located five minutes' walk from Kuramaguchi Station on the Karasuma Line of the Kyoto Metro in Kamigyo Ward. The shop deals in many varieties of vinegar, including rice vinegar and sushi vinegar, all made with superior water and domestically produced rice. Customers can try their hand at making their own ponzu (by reservation only). The shop is popular with both local families and tourists.
