    The Hakodate Asaichi (Morning Markets) are regarded as the face of Hakodate and it is said that the market began when nearby farmers began selling fruit and vegetables in 1945 after the war. The markets became even more popular with the addition of shops selling seafood such as crab and salmon with food and drink shops as well. Now about 5,000 people visit the market every day. You can purchase Rokkatei confectionery from the shop on the first floor, including their classic Marusei Butter Sandwich Cake, and the Marusei Ice Cream Sandwich Cake, amongst other things. Light food and desserts are served in the cafe on the second floor with the aromatic mugwort mochi (rice cake) and croissants being particularly popular. It’s a popular place to visit for tea or lunch as well as a great place to come and buy some souvenirs when sightseeing in Sapporo. The nearest station is Sapporo Station.

It sells confectionary that includes soft serve ice cream using fresh milk from the dairy farm directly next door and local 100% rice flour swiss rolls. The location is also attractive with a sense of openness from gazing at Mt. Yotei, which is a symbol of Niseko.

    What a treat! Ice creams, cream puffs, cheese tarts are our favorite. Hokkaido milk products are just top-notch!

There are two buildings on the vast site of 5,280 square meters, divided into three themes of sweets, a bakery and a café. In the shop building you can purchase not only popular items as souvenirs, but also homemade breads and the store’s own roll-cake baked in the kitchen on site. In the café building with a large sunlit window, you can enjoy a meal menu offering beef stroganoff, omelet and fresh pasta, as well as pancakes which two types of cheese melted on top which are also popular.

    A wholesale shopping street located next to the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market. Originally a wholesale market for retailers, today anyone is free to shop here. The foods found here are stocked direct from the central market and are all fresh and reasonably priced. There are also many sushi restaurants, set meal restaurants, and ramen restaurants operating in the market, so visitors can dine in between exploring and shopping. Market closing days are irregular. Days when the market is closed are announced in advance on the market's website.

    A Western confectionary shop located on the second floor of the New Chitose Airport domestic departures terminal building. The shop's Blue Honeysuckle Jewelry cookies, made with special Hokkaido blue honeysuckles, has been a beloved favorite since they were created in 1978. The White Mix version of the cookies is only sold at the New Chitose Airport location. Other popular selections which make great souvenirs include the gelatin made with Hokkaido fruit tomatoes, and the Tamago Manju buns made with eggs from Chitose.

    A Japanese and Western confectionary shop located on the second floor of the New Chitose Airport domestic departures terminal building. Kitakaro sells select original sweets made with Hokkaido ingredients. The shop offers a wide variety of products sure to be loved by men and women, young and old, such as its signature Yosei no Mori baumkuchens and the Kaitaku Okaki snacks, popular with men. The Yumekaze-sen, a gooey choux creme served in a cup, is only sold at the New Chitose Airport location; this popular treat is so delicious, it's a frequent purchase of cabin attendants and airport staff as well. The shop has an eat-in space where you can enjoy a sweet right after you buy it or soft serve ice cream, sold only here.

    Their cream puff is really the best. Very very generous with the cream filing. At 180yen... it is fantastic value and not to be missed when you are at Sapporo Dimaru or New Chitose Airport. Too bad...

    In March of 2016 this building was remodeled to become the Japanese confectionery Kitakaro's Main Shop in Sapporo. Originally called the Gyokei Memorial Hokkaido Public Library, it was built in 1926; it was later known as an art museum. The first floor is a shop designed on a salon theme. It displays the work of the painter Kotaro Migishi. The open atrium on the second floor features a cafe where guests can enjoy lunch and sweets while browsing among their roughly 6,000 books. Items only available at this shop include their classic chocolate cake and chocolate sandwich cookies; their croissant cream puffs are available in limited quantities. From the menu, their Kitakaro Jiman-no-Omurice rice omelets come recommended.

    The Chitosetsuru Sake Museum has been awarded the gold award 14 years running in the National Research Institute of Brewing Awards. Real Hokkaido sake, born in Hokkaido and brewed in Hokkaido. In the museum is a display area where you can find out about the history and specialties of brewing sake, as well as a tasting counter. You can also taste the water used for brewing, said to be the lifeblood of sake, and purchase sake directly from the brewery at the shop. The museum is a five minute walk from exit 9, Bus Center-mae Station on the Tozai Subway Line. Entry is free of charge and the museum is closed only over the end of the year and New Year holidays.

    This morning market in Hakodate has a fishing pond with squid in it. The large oval fish tank inside the market is filled with live squid swimming about vigorously. To fish, pay at the shop front and then wait your turn to use the provided fishing pole and catch yourself a squid. One of the most exciting things about the fishing tank is that once caught, the squid will retaliate by shooting out jets of sea water. As the value of squid fluctuates, so too does the price of fishing for squid here. You can have the squid you catch processed right then and there to eat as sashimi.
