    Located in the Nakasu district of Hakata Ward in Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture, this is the main branch of “Fukuya,” which is where Hakata’s famous “karashimentaiko” (salted cod roe with red pepper) dish originated. Born in Busan, South Korea, the founder created mentaiko (salted cod roe) in an attempt to recreate myonnajjo (walleye pollack), a dish from his homeland. The traditional taste has been preserved to this day, and it is beloved as one of Hakata’s most well-known souvenirs. In addition to its flagship product, the store offers sweets and various processed mentaiko goods that make perfect gifts. The fact that they are sold by the original manufacturer means the prices are reasonable as well, which only further enhances their appeal.

    This Japanese confectionery store was established in 1948, on the path leading up to the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine. The plum garden confectionary store has a selection of carefully created Japanese sweets such as Houmanzan, dedicated to the Emperor, and Uso no Mochi. The store creates different sweets each season and is a favorite of culture and tea-lovers. It is approximately 30 minutes by car from Fukuoka Airport, or one minute on foot from the Nishitetsu Dazaifu Station.

    Originating in the Taisho era and boasting over 100 years of history, this is sometimes called the kitchen of Kitakyushu. Inside the market are lined dozens of stalls including fresh fish vendors, meat vendors and greengrocers, and everything from locally-caught fresh fish dishes as well as specialties including mentaiko (spicy cod roe) to dried goods and side dishes. The famous “Daigaku-don” (Daigaku rice bowl) offered by Daigakudo allows one to take a bowl of white rice around the different stalls and pick whichever toppings they like for their own original rice bowl.

    Really enjoyed the little break in this cafe. Beautiful and tasty cakes. They use seasonal fruit to make their desserts. Nice place to relax after busy shopping schedule.

    友達3人で訪問しました。表には「天然酵母のパン屋」「カレーパンがお奨め」という表示がされてました。夕方だったので種類や数は少なかったです。お奨めのカレーパン220円と揚げパン140円を購入しました。後者のみ夜頂きました。ふわふわし、油っぽくはなく美味しかったです。前者は翌朝、チンしていただきましたが、「うーん」当日なら美味しかったのかもしれませんが、値段の割に納得できないお味でした。
