A 10 minute walk from Imaichi Station on the JR Nikko Line. This miso and soy sauce producer and shop has been operating since the Edo period 400 years ago, its white walls and gabled roof standing out against its surroundings. Among other things, here you can buy Japanese leek and other vegetables pickled in tamari, a rich soy sauce produced as a byproduct when making miso; Uwasawa Umetaro Shoten releases a fresh batch of these “tamari-zuke” pickles each morning from its storehouse. The shop area’s showcases are lined with products, while the tasting area is also well-stocked, ensuring you can take your time sampling products to choose your favorites for purchase. The most popular item on offer is the pickled Japanese leek, which is carefully prepared without cooking the leek to ensure maximum flavor and texture.

I love Japanese pickles so we made sure to stop while we were in Nikko. This manufacturer has been in business for more than 400 years. We tried a few things and bought a few things. There’s a sake...

This Japanese sweets shop is located in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. They make and sell an original product called Age Yuba Manju. These red bean paste-filled buns are coated with a batter made by mixing yuba (tofu skin) and carefully-selected soy milk and deep fried. They have an enjoyable flaky texture and sweet taste. Their shaved ice, which is made with natural ice source locally in Nikko, is also gaining popularity.

After spending a long day in Nikko it was a good decision to buy some perfect snacks. Two pieces of Nikko Age Yuba Manju cost 440 yen and I got a tea for free. This place was just across the square...

英語版⬇ I did not take...

"This sake brewery uses water from the Sake no Izumi, which has a nearly-religious following amongst sake connoisseurs thanks to its reputation for producing great sake. Known for its association with legends about the Buddhist monk Kukai, the aptly-named ""spring of sake"" is counted amongst the Three Miraculous Waters of Nikko. The brewery also pays great attention to the rice and yeast it uses. It is also notable for its use of the Sase-style straining, a time-consuming technique that forgoes the use of presses but ensures that the flavor of the rice remains in the sake. The brewery also offers tours to groups of up to 30. Large groups should call ahead of time."

Tochigi Areas

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
