"This sake brewery uses water from the Sake no Izumi, which has a nearly-religious following amongst sake connoisseurs thanks to its reputation for producing great sake. Known for its association with legends about the Buddhist monk Kukai, the aptly-named ""spring of sake"" is counted amongst the Three Miraculous Waters of Nikko. The brewery also pays great attention to the rice and yeast it uses. It is also notable for its use of the Sase-style straining, a time-consuming technique that forgoes the use of presses but ensures that the flavor of the rice remains in the sake. The brewery also offers tours to groups of up to 30. Large groups should call ahead of time."

Short walk from the Nikko train station we arrived at Katayama Shuzo. We were greeted by the owner and his wife. The owner took us on a tour (no shoes), due to our timing the sake brewing season was...

Kanaya Hotel Bakery opened in 1968 and offers a delicious new flavor while following the traditional technique from Kanaya Cottage Inn which opened in 1873. About 50 types of bread including plain bread and pastries are sold as well as cookies and cakes. Unless you want a meal more suited for lunch avoid this place. The only item resembling a breakfast item was plain toast and cinimon toast. The coffee was very poor as well.

Tochigi Areas

around-area-map

Most visits to Tochigi revolve around Nikko, a small city home to the spectacular, lavishly decorated Toshogu Shrine and Nikko National Park with its mountains, lakes, waterfalls, onsen, and wild monkeys. Neighboring Oku-Nikko is an extension of the fantastic scenery famous for its autumn leaves, while Tochigi’s capital, Utsunomiya, is the only place in the world where you can find oya stone beautifully exhibited in temples and the Oya History Museum.
