The Yomitan store is the flagship store of Okashigoten, which makes confectionery using local Okinawan ingredients; the most famous Okashigoten product is their “Original Purple Sweet-Potato Sweets.” Located in Yomitan Village on land that used to be sugar-cane fields, the Yomitan store is easily recognized from the huge flower-covered hat at the entrance. Inside, the store has a wide range of confectionery products created at the company’s own factory, made using typically Okinawan ingredients such as purple sweet-potatoes and brown sugar; these can be purchased in quantities as small as a single sweet. Visitors can also view the production line at the factory next door. There is a restaurant and a café; the Hanagasa Café offers “Purple Sweet-Potato Sweets” fresh from the factory, which are not available anywhere else.

Yukishio Saltworks on Miyako Island produces “snow salt” (salt in powder form) using salty groundwater pumped up from underground. Display panels explain the process of making the salt. There is a shop selling “snow salt” and products made using “snow salt.” The shop offers a number of unique products that can only be purchased here; the “Snow Salt Soft Ice-cream,” which is covered with “snow salt” in a variety of different flavors, is particularly popular.

The cookies are good although quite expensive, the salt factory is too small and not operate in full mode, so you only here for the cookies (at least for me)

At the end of New Paradise Street along the way to Kokusai-dori Street, you’ll come across this ball donut specialty shop. As the name implies, ball donuts are donuts in the shape of a ball, and they’re different from sata andagi (Okinawan deep-fried dough buns). Basic ball donuts are covered in sugar made from sugarcane, though varieties topped with lemon and natural sugar, salt and butter, and “Churakoibeni (a kind of sweet potato)” are also available, among others.

Came here twice during a short trip to Okinawa. The modern interior is beautiful and perfectly suited to the lofi soundtrack The small donuts which they specialise in are perfect and there’s a wide...

Located on the marine road that connects Yokatsu Peninsula and Henza Island, it is surrounded on both sides by the beautiful sea. The first floor contains special Uruma City products along with a fresh fish section and a buffet-style restaurant. The second floor features the “Sea Culture Archive,” which contains materials on the history of Katsuren Peninsula as well as folklore materials and a Maran vessel exhibition. You'll also find materials on the construction of the marine road.

This is one of my favorite roadside stops. When you are driving to the outer islands, reachable by car, it is one of the last places you will see, with so many conveniences. There is room for...

This confectionery has been around for over 60 years. Round rice cakes, butter cakes, and other traditional Okinawan sweets are on display outside the shop. The sata andagi (Okinawan sweet deep-fried bun) come in a variety of flavors, such as pineapple, caramel, purple yam, pumpkin, and banana, making them popular among both locals and foreigners. Their “brown sugar candy” is soft and preserves the original taste of the ingredients, which has made it a popular item for years and led to it constantly being sold out.

Bread made only from selected ingredients and using only Japanese wheat is baked in limited quantities so it is recommended to get in early. Okinawa Main Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You’ve arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan’s most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
