    Kagawa Nakatado-gun Kotohiracho
This is a dye shop at the foot of Konpira Shrine. This historic shop has carried on the traditional Kagawa prefectural art of Sanuki nori-zome (dyeing with glue) for over 100 years. Amidst the current trend of digital print dyes, the Sanuki nori-zome still carefully and painstakingly dyes each fabric by hand using the rice starch. The brightly colored patterns are created by placing rice starch where the color should not adhere. This warm deep-nuanced dyes are used for many prominent occasions, such as for the flags of Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Daishibai theater, the costumes for the ceremonial shishimai lion dances and for the festive flags for fishing boat decking.

People pour in for Hiraoka Meat Shop 's freshly fried meat croquettes. They're crispy, hot, and juicy, with a burst of soupy goodness in the middle. Other fine items you'd only get at a butcher shop like this include their Hiraoka Mama no Menchikatsu meat cakes made with Japanese pork and beef, nothing frozen or imported, as well as their Sanuki-no-honetsuki-dori (chicken-on-the-bone) roast chicken.

    Kagawa Pref. Zentsujishi Zentsujichou 3-4-11
Kumaoka Kashiten is a retro-style traditional Japanese confectionery store. It sells Ishi-pan (“Stone Bread”) biscuits, which are reputed to be the hardest type of traditional confectionery in Japan. Ishi-pan was originally made as emergency rations for soldiers in wartime, as it keeps for a long time. Despite the fact that no drying agents or preservatives are used in the process of making them, they keep for around a month before going off; Ishi-pan became famous throughout Japan for how well it kept. Ishi-pan is much harder than ordinary hardtack biscuits, so much so that young children and senior citizens may find it impossible to chew. Ishi-pan has a slightly sweet flavor, with a hint of ginger.

    Kagawa Nakatado-gun Kotohiracho 892-1
This is the name given to the five sweets shops, as a group, which line the path when one enters through the great gate at the 365th step on the Kotohira Shrine premises. Sitting behind their wares, under five beautiful white paper umbrellas, the vendors sell the Kamiyo sweets still made in the traditional method said to have been passed down for over 700 years. The name Gonin-hyakusho, by which these vendors are called, is an official title given to attendants in the sacred service of the shrine. In recognition of the services provided by their ancestors, these are the only vendors allowed to sell their produce within the confines of the shrine. The special kamiyo candy is an elegantly shaped golden candy made with the simple three ingredients of sugar, starch syrup and yuzu citrus. This hard candy with a faint yuzu scent comes with a very small hammer with which one is to crack the candy.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
