    A shop founded in 1946 at Kawara-machi Shijyo which sells both tukudani foods preserved in soy sauce and confections. Selling both sweet and salty foods, the shop’s bite sized shiitake mushroom tukudani and kohaku jelly are its most popular items in these respective categories. Whether sweet or salty, all of the shop’s products are made with select ingredients by artisans with experience cultivated since the shop first opened. The shop is adjoined by a café which serves beverages, parfaits, anmitsu syrup covered sweet beans, and seasonal items.

    A venerable Kyoto pickles shop located along Fuyacho-dori Street south of the Nishiki Market. The shop was founded in 1865 to sell pickles made with Shogoin turnips and other vegetables made by Oguroya Tosaburo, a former cook for the Kyoto Imperial Palace whose pickles had come to be renowned throughout court. His pickled sliced radish, dubbed “senmai-zuke” (“thousand slice pickles”), were extremely popular and this shop is thus the originator of this dish which is now a standard part of Japanese cuisine.

    A shop which makes and sells sesame seed oil located in the Katsuratatsumi-cho, neighborhood of Nishikyo Ward. Still using the same production method utilized when the shop was founded, Yamada sells additive-free sesame seed oil by weight, slowly prepared using a firewood furnace. The shop also sells oil cakes leftover from the oil making process and eggs from chickens fed on the same. On clear Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays, the shop opens a small market stand out front selling sesame sweets and vegetables.

    Walk south from the Minami-Romon Gate (south gate) of Yasaka Shrine in Gion to find Yayoi main restaurant close by. It is a restaurant offering Kyoto cuisine of preserved foods boiled in soy, focused around chirimen-sansho (dried young sardines with pepper) known as Ojako. The famous small fish dish was created when first generation shop owner Katsuji Nakanishi was feeling unwell and needed something that could be prepared in one pan. Inside the main restaurant there is also a cafe utilizing Scandinavian furniture. Here inside a traditional Kyoto sukiya-style building surrounded by chic Scandinavian furniture one can enjoy creative cuisine including ochazuke (rice with tea poured in) and ojako pasta.

With the motto “making tea with true elegance,” they have complete quality control from cultivation to production and offer a flavorful Uji-cha tea. At the Nishinotoin branch on Nishinotoin-dori Street near Nijojo-mae Station they sell matcha, gyokuro and sencha high quality green teas as well as confectionery containing matcha. At the joint-established teahouse “Genan” one can spend a relaxing time enjoying a tea and sweets set or perhaps a cake.

    Yaosan is an old miso specialist operating at the crossing of Aneyakoji-dori Street and Higashinotoin-dori Street since 1708. It originally catered shojin ryori (Buddhist vegetarian cuisine) for the Imperial Palace and Chion-in Temple, but became a miso specialist from the Taisho period. Their signature dish of Yuzu Miso uses yuzu from Saga Mizuo in Ukyo Ward which is nicknamed “Yuzu Village.” The recipe was formulated by the first generation and the flavor has been passed down to this day. The containers also take a cute yuzu shape and would make welcome gifts.

    300年の歴史を持つ柚味噌一筋の老舗、八百三さんに柚味噌を買いに行きました。自宅では野菜スティックに付けていただくと香りがよいので京都に来るたびに買い求めます。柚子の形をした陶器の入れ物はすでに持っていますし、これに入っているものは、高いし持って帰るのが大変なので木箱入りのものを買っています。賞味期限1ケ月程度と短いのでたくさん買えないのが残念です。

    The Honda Miso main store is an old miso shop dating back from the Tenpo period and is located along Ichijo-dori Street on the west side of the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The famous Saikyo light-brown miso is just 5% salt—the lowest among misos—and is a great miso option for those concerned about salt intake. Up until the Edo period they focused on miso for the imperial court only, but from the Meiji period they opened to more general sales. While obstinately protecting the techniques, they have cultivated over many years, they also respond to the changes of the time and the motto “immutability and fluidity” goes into the making of miso even today.

    毎回京都に来るたびに利用します。今回はお味噌以外にもお醤油やふりかけも買ってみました。やっぱり白味噌が1番好きかな〜。宿泊していたホテルに近いので便利です。

    Miki-Keiran is a specialty shop selling the kind of rolled Japanese-style omelette seen during New Year’s celebrations in Kyoto. Located in the center of Nishiki Market, sometimes called the kitchen of Kyoto, the shop’s soup stock kombu has used Hokkaido Laminaria ochotensis kelp from the time of establishment. They use the traditional “Kyomaki” style of cooking, rolling from the front to the back and covering in plenty of soup stock. There is also a popular bread menu making use of the deliciousness of eggs, including the “egg yolk anko roll” with a special blend of three varieties of egg and “egg yolk red bean butter bread.”

    だし巻き卵専門店で代表格のお店でもあり、年末などは行列がよくできているほどです。普段もちょっとしたものを食べ歩きするのにとても人気なお店になっています。また、こちらの期間限定のパンの販売があります。それは昔懐かしいクリームパンで、クリームの色がやはり黄色が濃くとても美味しかったです。

    This is the head store of Fukujuen, made famous by its collaboration with Suntory to make “Iyemon.” On every floor of this tall building they are developing shops of different concepts. In the first floor basement they are producing order-made tea, and on the over-ground first floor they are selling tea for gifts. On the second floor they have light meals that match the aroma of tea, and on the third one can enjoy authentic French cuisine. On the fourth floor is a tea room where it is possible to take part in tea ceremonies. On the fifth floor they sell tea utensils carefully selected by Fukujuen. On the sixth floor there is a space where they regularly hold events.

    This is a long-established store continuing since the Edo period selling condiments. Their most famous product is “Kuro Shichimi” (Black Seven Spice), the main ingredient being Sansho (Japanese pepper), with a combination of aromas and a complex taste, and as the name suggests, is black in color. A spice called “Gokosen” (roasted barley flour) is another specialty of the shop. It is a combination of seasonings such as dried citrus peel combined with salt which becomes a refreshing scented drink when dissolved in hot water. Gokosen is currently produced only at this shop.

Founded in 1804 by a Fushimi Daigo kettle caster, the shop has provided its wares to the Imperial Palace and Nijo Castle. The specially ordered wooden molds the shop once used have been repurposed to serve as the frame of the shop’s sign today. The shop is most famous for its “Kyo no Yosuga,” a box of mixed sweets divided into five compartments containing dried confections incorporating the design of seasonal flowers.

The shop also sells coffee storage cans, drippers, and other goods, as well as gifts.

The shop is famous for its juices, fresh-squeezed on the spot from fruits on hand, and the menu consists of some 20 seasonal varieties, including fig, mango, pineapple, watermelon, and muskmelon. You can also ask for special blends of juices to be made for you.

    京都観光は歩きがメインなので喉が渇きます。鞄の中にあるPETボトルのお茶が空になり、もう一本買おうと思った時に、このお店を見つけました。ごく普通にオレンジをいただきました。『濃い-、うまい!』と思った記憶があります。疲れていたため身体が果糖を欲していたとしても美味しかったです。

    This Japanese sweets shop located in the Shimogyo Ward of Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture is a long-established place that has taken part in offerings and various matters since around the time that Honganji Temple was built in the Yamashina area of Kyoto in 1483. Its representative famous sweet “Matsukaze” is said to have been created while Oda Nobunaga was fighting Ishiyama Hongan-ji Temple, a battle which continued for 11 years from 1570. Matsukaze, which is made by taking a blend of wheat flour, sugar, malt syrup, and light-brown miso, then fermenting it and grilling it in a circular pot, has a consistency and special flavor that is almost addictive and is a standard present among Kyoto souvenirs. Both in the broad interior and at the storefront are barrels full of tsukemono made with seasonal vegetables and vegetables that are from Kyoto. There is a complete sampling corner which is loved by patrons since one can sample nearly all of their products. In addition to products for souvenirs and gifts, there are also many products that can be bought as needed by weight. The shop is bustling as it is loved not only by tourists but locals who shop there regularly. The closest stations are Karasuma Station and Shijo Station.
