This is a public bathhouse of the historical Dogo Onsen. The three-tiered wooden building has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. It sprung to fame after it was mentioned in Natsume Soseki’s novel, Botchan. The dark interior with its pillars, beams and wooden lockers oozes with antiquated charm. The Honkan has two indoor baths, the Kami no Yu and the Tama no Yu, where visitors can relax and enjoy a pleasant soak. At extra charge guests can use the resting room complete with a hired yukata and some tea and cake. The nearest station is Dogo Onsen Station.

Not something for me personally, but my wife assures me there is something special about the water here. She took a bath, reasonably price and time limited (so I didnt have to wait around until she...

A hot spring bathhouse in Dogoyunomachi, Matsuyama City. This day-trip bathhouse was built for the opening of the 1953 National Athletic Meet. Come relax in baths fed by hot spring cisterns from a free-flowing spring that can't be had anywhere but Dogo Onsen.

This is a very satisfactory bath though not up to the level of the honkan. In any other place, this would be a premium bath. However, do note that you must bring or buy soap and shampoo (towels are...

The third of the Dogo Onsen bathhouses after Dogo Onsen Tsubaki-no-Yu. The bathhouse is built to encapsulate the concept of Asuka period architecture including ornamental ridge end rooftiles resembling historical structures such as Nara's Todaiji temple and a vivid outward appearance of contrasting red and white to draw the eye. Along with the large indoor public baths decorated with Tobe-ware walls they also have an outdoor bath unlike the Honkan Main Building and you can relax in the high-quality spring water to your heart's content.

This onsen operated like a high end bathing house . The onsen is building is beautiful built and they are for a purpose of admiring the building more than just for a onsen visit . First , the onsen...

The Shikoku Matsuyama Dogo Onsen hotel is a long-established hot springs hotel located approximately three minutes’ walk from Dogo Onsen Station (on the Iyotetsu Jonan Line tram line). The hotel traces its origins back to a hot springs inn that was opened during the Kan’ei era (1624–1644), and which was famous for being patronized by leading literary figures connected with Matsuyama. Day visitors are welcome to use the hot springs facilities. The cypress-wood bath, where bathers can relax while enjoying the marvelous scent of Hinoki (cypress wood), and the two granite bathtubs (made using the Iyo region’s famous Oshima granite) are open to male bathers at certain times of day and female bathers at other times. Saunas and open-air baths are also available.

We stayed here for a night and had a set Japanese dinner. I had high expectations of what a top quality Japanese restaurant would be like. Unfortunately while it was nicely presented with very...

One of the hot springs at Dogo Onsen, it plays the role of distributing spring water drawn from each source to nearby hot spring bathhouses, hotels, and ryokan style inns. Inside there's a handwashing station allowing you to feel the spring water from the source first hand as well as a viewing room where you can observe the spring water as it falls into the hot water tanks.

  • Dogo Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Ehime Matsuyama-shi Dogoyunomachi
A hot spring area famously known as one of Japan’s “Three Ancient Springs.” Boasting an extremely long history, the area is mentioned in the “Nihon shoki,” an ancient historical chronical compiled in the distant Nara period. It is also said that Prince Shotoku and numerous writers and artists such as Natsume Soseki and Masaoka Shiki bathed in its curative waters. In the center of the area’s hot spring district stands the Dogo Onsen Honkan, a public bathhouse whose building is over 120 years old and which continues to serve large numbers of customers. The waters of the alkaline simple spring are said to promote recovery from fatigue and alleviate nerve pain and joint pain. Some of the many nearby sightseeing destinations include Isanawa Shrine, the Shiki Memorial Museum, and the Dogo Haikara-dori Street shopping district, and visitors can enjoy exploring the area’s history in addition to therapeutic hot spring bathing.

Ehime Areas

around-area-map

Stretched across the northwest corner of Shikoku island, Ehime is a nature-rich prefecture boasting beautiful coastlines and a rural center where mountains play host to 26 of the Buddhist temples that make up the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Matsuyama is home to an original post-feudal castle as well as Dogo Onsen, one of the country’s oldest natural hot springs. The northern city of Imabari marks the entrance to the Shimano Kaido, a road that crosses six spectacular bridges and several islands, forming a route between Shikoku and mainland Honshu.
