The port serves as a base for tuna longline fishing and boasts the greatest catches of fresh tuna in Japan. Tuna auctions are also held here early in the morning, and visitors can watch this taking place from a second-floor observation deck. The Katsuura Fishing Port Nigiwai Market is held at the port every Sunday morning. Visitors to the market can purchase fresh seafood at bargain prices. In addition, the Nankikatsuura Onsen hot spring district is located right next door, making it easy to plan a fun-filled sightseeing route.

Went in after the tuna auction for some fresh quality tuna. Did not disappoint ! Its a very small market with around 15-20 shops. But their food s great ! Outdoor dining area available as well

Renowned for its fresh fish and seafood, Nagahama Fish Market is the fourth largest fish market in Japan in terms of the amount of fish handled, and is known informally as ""Hakata's Kitchen."" With the aim of making the market a friendly place that local residents feel comfortable visiting, Nagahama Fish Market has adopted the latest technology; Shijo Kaikan building at the heart of the market complex has restaurants where visitors can enjoy delicious seafood, as well as Uoching Plaza where people can have fun learning about fish. The second Saturday of every month is ""Citizen Appreciation Day,"" when ordinary members of the public are allowed into the area where the wholesale fish auctions take place to purchase fish for themselves."

Definitely a letdown. Nothing much happening here. No fish market for the public to visit, not even an outer section. Just a few restaurants in the next building serving food you can get elsewhere.

Went quite early, shops are open during breakfast time, which is good, you dont get a crowd. dont miss out the shops across the road too.

Visitors can eat Inukanno soba noodles made by the local farming cooperative and purchase fresh local vegetables. Some of the offerings on its menu include handmade hachiwari soba (soba noodles with 80% buckwheat flour and 20% wheat filler), sobagaki (buckwheat dumplings), and ohagi (glutinous rice balls coated in sweet red bean paste).
