Situated in the eastern foothills of Shiun-zan (Mt. Shiun), Ritsurin Garden was formerly the garden of a daimyo (feudal lord), and is now a designated Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Of the gardens in Japan that are designated as Special Places of Scenic Beauty, this is one of the largest. The Garden comprises the North Garden, which was completed in modern times, and the South Garden, which features a circuitous path round a pond. With the verdant greenery of Mt. Shiun as a backdrop, the Ritsurin Garden is beautifully laid out, with six ponds and thirteen artificial hills; in every season (spring, summer, autumn and winter) the garden has its own unique majesty. There are a number of places to stop and rest within the garden, including the Higurashi-tei teahouse and the Ritsurin-an shop, which sells local specialty products from various parts of Kagawa Prefecture. The garden can be reached by bus from JR Takamatsu Station; get off at the “Ritsurin Garden” stop.

This is probably one of the best gardens Ive been to. Despite being a popular tourist destination, there is still enough space to walk around since this place is huge. Moreover, there is no...

This art museum overlooks the Seto-ohashi Bridge and Hitsuishi-jima Island, the birthplace of Higashiyama Kai’s grandfather. It stores more than 270 lithographs donated by the Higashiyama family, and holds exhibitions of various themes. The view from the cafe overlooking the Seto Inland Sea and the Seto-ohashi Bridge is a magnificent.

60 minutes by ferry from Takamatsu Port. This is the birthplace of domestic olive production in Japan, an olive garden stretching on the plateau overlooking the natural beauty of the seas of Shodoshima Island. The “Olive no Oka” includes a 100-years old olive tree, interactive sculptures by sculptor Isamu Noguchi, and a gallery featuring Akari. You can enjoy local Shodoshima Island flavor with “Hishio don” and “olive somen noodles” at Olive Palace—a restaurant which also sells olive oil and a variety of homemade olive products.

    近くに、オリーブ公園があり、一見、違いがあまりわかりませんでした。 ただ、多くの人の手が入っているのは分かりました。 駐車場での、案内、土産物屋での定員の様子が感じよかったように思います。

He worked on an enormous range of projects like landscape design involving monuments, gardens, and parks, interiors with furniture and lighting fixtures, and stage art. He was a singular artist, and this cosmopolitan space has a universality that transcends genres.

The New Yashima Aquarium is located on Mt. Yashima. There are plenty of things for visitors to experience such as feeding the manatees, seeing the dolphins up close and touching them from the glass-bottom boat, and touching the sea lions, etc. They also have a live show featuring the dolphins and staff.

Truly the worst I’ve ever seen. Tiny , dirty tanks, sad animals, sea lions, penguins large turtles, hardly moving out of boredom and despair! Pitiful dolphin show. I forgot to check reviews before...

MIMOCA (Marugame Genichiro-Inokuma Museum of Contemporary Art) is an art museum in Marugame City. The museum was established to celebrate the artistic career of Genichiro Inokuma, an artist who grew up in the Marugame area and who later became a leading figure in international art circles, as well as to help reinvigorate culture and the arts in the Marugama region. MIMOCA’s location was chosen to make it easily accessible from the nearby railway station, giving it a more convenient location than more or less any other museum of its kind in Japan. The permanent exhibitions showcase the roughly 20,000 artworks that have been donated to the museum; in addition, several special exhibitions are held every year. The museum café has won acclaim for its “limited-edition” desserts, which are changed frequently to accompany MIMOCA’s special exhibitions.

The museum is 2min from JR Marugame Station. The building is beautiful and contemporary. Inside is spacious and many exhibits on each floor. It was interesting to know that Mr. Inokumas art changed...

Shirotori Zoo was established in 1985 in Higashikagawa City, Kagawa Prefecture. It is popular as a place where visitors can enjoy getting close to the animals without being hindered by cages and fences normally found at other zoos. Rabbits and peacocks can be seen freely roaming about around the zoo and the parking lot. And in the Animals Exploration Plaza, animals such as deer, goat, sheep, turkey, mouflon, and llama graze and wander freely. Other popular attractions include the impressive white tiger display, the Wanwan Plaza where visitors can play with unusual breeds of dog, and a stage with animal shows, etc.

This private zoo is not very large, but is quite interesting. There are a wide range of animals, including a huge number of tigers, an elephant, a hyena, a hippo, and owls. However, the main appeal...

This museum is located just off of the central shopping arcade in Takamatsu City, about a 10-minute walk from the Kataharamachi Station. The museum stores approximately 1,600 works around the three main themes: “Arts (and Crafts) of Kagawa” prefecture introducing the artisanal lacquer ware and metal crafts, the “20th Century Art and Beyond from Around the World” traces trends through woodblock prints, and the “Post-War Contemporary Japanese Art” introduces the exceptional leading writers influencing each post-war period. The literature corner with approximately 50,000 volumes, primarily on art and culture, is also available to visitors, while the museum shop sells seasonal exhibit related goods.

Visited this museum during the Setochi Triennale in October 2019. The exhibitions, by young local and overseas artists were very good. Also enjoyed the coffee shop on the ground floor.

Nakazu Banshoen was created in 1688 by the second Marugame feudal lord Kyogoku Takatoyo as part of his Nakatsu estate. The strolling garden has a pond side main structure and a tea room with a great view from the mezzanine floor stretching from the grounds to the sea. We also recommend the Kaifutei restaurant where you can dine in a relaxed atmosphere while gazing at the beautiful scenery of this Japanese garden.

There is a small museum in this garden. This was made in 1688 and over 1500 pine trees and many kinds of flowers. There is also a nice restaurant and you can enjoy Japanese foods.

Choshikei Gorge is one of Shodoshima Island's top scenic areas, in the same league as Kankakei Gorge. The Uchiwa no Minato Museum (POLCA) is a museum dedicated to the history of Marugame uchiwa (traditional paper fans). During the Edo period, it became customary to buy Marugame paper fans as souvenirs of a pilgrimage to the Kotohira Shrine, and fan-making became an important local industry in Marugame. The making of Marugame uchiwa fans has been designated a National Traditional Craft. The exhibits in POLCA include examples of different types of Marugame uchiwa fan dating from the Edo period to the present day, as well as the main regional fan styles from other parts of Japan, and mannequins showing the fan-making process, etc. There is also a demonstration area where visitors can see traditional fan-making techniques being demonstrated. POLCA is located around 15 minutes’ walk from JR Marugame Station.

Making fans was so enjoyable. We have seen many wonderful temples, gardens and castles and even been to Disney Tokyo. I have to say that for some reason this was one of the most memorable...

In addition to introducing areas of interest, accommodations, and local souvenirs, they provide rent-a-cycles, often the best way to fully enjoy downtown Sakaide. Ideal for riding and strolling, these bicycles can be rented by the day for a reasonable price just by providing some checkout information. If arriving by car, the parking under the station is free for 30 minutes.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
