Mokujiki traveled all over Japan and left behind more than 1,000 Buddhist statues across the country during his lifetime. His works have a creative style that does not conform to traditional styles of Buddhist carving. Called ""mishobutsu"" (smiling Buddhas) for the faint smiles on the mouths of many of their mouths, his Buddhist images were widely worshipped by the common folk. The nearby birthplace of Mokujiki is open to the public as Mokujiki Memorial Hall."
