    The Shimonoseki Marine Science Museum, affectionately known as “Kaikyokan,” is an aquarium in the Karato district of Shimonoseki City which opened in 2001. The Museum is famous for its collection of over 100 species of Fugu (Pufferfish) from all over the world and for its exhibit of a complete skeleton of a Blue Whale. Must-sees include the “Humboldt Penguin Special Conservation Area,” where visitors can observe a recreation of the habitat of the Humboldt Penguin, which lives in areas with a warm climate, and performances featuring dolphins and sea-lions.

    Located next to Kikko Park in the Yokoyama district of Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, the Yokoyama White Snake Viewing Facility is a place where visitors can see the famous “Iwakuni White Snakes,” which have been designated as a National Natural Monument. The facility has recently been renovated and renamed as the Iwakuni White Snake Museum. Inside the facility there are displays on the biology of the White Snakes, along with models, showings of video footage, displays about the legends associated with the White Snakes, etc. A real effort has been made to ensure that visitors can enjoy learning about the Iwakuni White Snakes.

    Built on the site of the former Kameyama campus of the Faculty of Economics, Yamaguchi University, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum is a public art museum with a strong local flavor that is closely integrated with the local community. The Museum’s collections are oriented toward artists with a connection to Yamaguchi Prefecture; for example, they include works from Kazuki Yasuo’s “Siberia Series,” works by Kobayashi Wasaku, etc. The collections also include many outstanding Nihonga paintings (including the “Landscape Scroll After Kegong Gao,” which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property) and photographic works, etc. The Museum holds several exhibitions of works from its own collections and special exhibitions every year. The bright, cheerful cafe facing the central atrium is very popular with visitors.

The Manabi Hall, utilizes a Meiji era sake brewery, the Miyabi Hall adapted the residence of the Mine Family, a wealthy farmer of the Meiji period, and the newly constructed Takumi Hall. The noble architecture of the historic structures themselves are worth the visit.

    The Shimonoseki City Art Museum is located in the Chofu district of Shimonoseki City. The Museum has a collection of approximately 2,000 paintings, including both Western and Japanese Nihonga paintings from the early modern and contemporary periods. Besides works by Kano Hogai, an artist born in Chofu who is known as the “Father of Modern Nihonga Painting,” the paintings on display in the Museum also include works by other artists with links to Shimonoseki City, such as Takashima Hokkai and Kazuki Yasuo, as well as the artworks from the Ancient Orient, etc. The Museum holds four to five exhibitions featuring works from its own collections every year, as well as special exhibitions featuring the works of both Japanese and overseas artists.

The Museum was opened in 1996 to house a collection of items donated by businessman Uragami Toshiro (who was born in Hagi); it was awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide.     A museum dedicated to Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which prospered as a castle town in the ancient Choshu Domain and where many historic buildings from that time still stand. The museum was built to serve as the central facility of the Hagi Machiju Museum project, which aims to turn the entire neighborhood into a giant museum. The museum contains some 190 thousand items connected to Hagi, including historical materials and works of art. There’s a section of the museum which presents historic figures affiliated with Hagi, such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Yoshida Shoin, a gallery where visitors can come in contact with the culture and natural environment of Hagi, and more. Four times a year, the museum holds special exhibits.

    A history museum located in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture which preserves and displays historical materials and artwork passed down from the Kikkawa clan, the former rulers of the ancient Iwakuni Domain. The museum’s collection includes some 2,500 National Important Cultural Properties, such as an original copy of the historic epic the “Taiheiki” and the “Kikkawa-ke monjo” Kikkawa clan records, in addition to Kitsunegaseki, a long sword designated a National Treasure. The front gate was originally built as part of the retirement residence of the seventh lord of Iwakuni Domain in 1793 and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property by the city of Iwakuni. The complex also has a black granite stage as well as a garden covered with white gravel that is a must-see.

Storing approximately 6,000 pieces of armor such as suit armor and swords from the Nara period (710-794) to the Edo period (1603-1868), old documents, writings and old mirrors, it exhibits about 200 pieces including the famous Kawanakajima Kassenzu, a folding screen with eight panels painted the battle of Kawanakajima.     "This museum is next to the Ayaragigo ruins. It displays about 500 pieces from the Yayoi and Kofun periods excavated from below Shimonoseki Castle. They have recreated life-size dioramas of ""storage pits"" and display materials connected to excavation and archaeology in the Regional Education Room. They also run tours and excursions around the Ayaragigo ruins. The grounds outside are built as a ruin park, with restored dugout shelters and kofun burial mounds for viewing."
