The Shimonoseki Marine Science Museum, affectionately known as “Kaikyokan,” is an aquarium in the Karato district of Shimonoseki City which opened in 2001. The Museum is famous for its collection of over 100 species of Fugu (Pufferfish) from all over the world and for its exhibit of a complete skeleton of a Blue Whale. Must-sees include the “Humboldt Penguin Special Conservation Area,” where visitors can observe a recreation of the habitat of the Humboldt Penguin, which lives in areas with a warm climate, and performances featuring dolphins and sea-lions.

Shimonoseki is famous for puffer fish. But I cant remember seeing so many species of puffer fish in an aquarium. In general, an enjoyable visit.

A safari park-style zoo located in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture where visitors can view wild animals from a vehicle in settings close to their natural environment. In the Safari Zone, visitors can view African elephants, huge American black bears, lions, tigers, and more, either from their own car or a reservable bus tour which includes a chance to feed some of the animals. The park’s petting zoo, where visitors can play with and feed cute animals such as kangaroos and capybaras, is also quite popular. The zoo also has rare live white tiger and white lion exhibits. Finally, the park has a restaurant and an amusement park area with a giant Ferris wheel and roller coasters, ensuring families can enjoy an entire, fun-filled day here.

A museum dedicated to Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, which prospered as a castle town in the ancient Choshu Domain and where many historic buildings from that time still stand. The museum was built to serve as the central facility of the Hagi Machiju Museum project, which aims to turn the entire neighborhood into a giant museum. The museum contains some 190 thousand items connected to Hagi, including historical materials and works of art. There’s a section of the museum which presents historic figures affiliated with Hagi, such as Takasugi Shinsaku and Yoshida Shoin, a gallery where visitors can come in contact with the culture and natural environment of Hagi, and more. Four times a year, the museum holds special exhibits.

A nice museum about the area. If you dont speak Japanese you can still enjoy it quitte a bit. The staff was nice.

The Hagi Uragami Museum is a museum in Hagi City that is dedicated to Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, East Asian ceramics and ceramic art. The Museum was opened in 1996 to house a collection of items donated by businessman Uragami Toshiro (who was born in Hagi); it was awarded two stars in the Michelin Green Guide. There is a tearoom where visitors can enjoy drinking green tea out of Hagi-ware teacups, which is popular as a place to relax while enjoying viewing art at the Museum.

Nice place, nice staff. Be careful though, they say they show the whole collection of Hokusai prints, when in reality, its just one from time to time.

The Shimonoseki City Art Museum is located in the Chofu district of Shimonoseki City. The Museum has a collection of approximately 2,000 paintings, including both Western and Japanese Nihonga paintings from the early modern and contemporary periods. This museum, located in Mine City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is for the purpose of academic research and nature conservation of Akiyoshidai. The history and formation of caves, as well as the living organisms are clearly explained. In addition to the specimens, photos and fossils on display, visitors are also able to watch videos. Mini special exhibitions, along with permanent exhibitions, are also held.

The area is very natural and interesting. It is worth a stroll on a sunny day. You can bring food and picnic there. Some small cafe scattered around.

The museum occupies the former mansion of the Oda family, one of the leading oil merchants in west Japan. The house features Irimoya (hip-and-gable) roof with an entrance on gable side and white plaster walls. With a length of nearly 120-meters and covering an area of 800-tsubo (nearly 2650 square meters) this mansion is one of the largest classic townhouses remaining within the country. "This museum is next to the Ayaragigo ruins. It displays about 500 pieces from the Yayoi and Kofun periods excavated from below Shimonoseki Castle. They have recreated life-size dioramas of ""storage pits"" and display materials connected to excavation and archaeology in the Regional Education Room. They also run tours and excursions around the Ayaragigo ruins. The grounds outside are built as a ruin park, with restored dugout shelters and kofun burial mounds for viewing."

Built on the site of the former Kameyama campus of the Faculty of Economics, Yamaguchi University, the Yamaguchi Prefectural Art Museum is a public art museum with a strong local flavor that is closely integrated with the local community. The Museum’s collections are oriented toward artists with a connection to Yamaguchi Prefecture; for example, they include works from Kazuki Yasuo’s “Siberia Series,” works by Kobayashi Wasaku, etc. The collections also include many outstanding Nihonga paintings (including the “Landscape Scroll After Kegong Gao,” which has been designated as an Important Cultural Property) and photographic works, etc. The Museum holds several exhibitions of works from its own collections and special exhibitions every year. This is the visitor's center for Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park. It is adjacent Taishodo cavern, a limestone cavern full of variation, and offers an introduction to the geology, history and nature of Akiyoshidai plateau. The hall holds various activity areas to engage all five senses, and you can enjoy learning about the natural environment, and ecological system of Akiyoshidai through images, models, and touch panel search machines. The Yahata Lifelong Learning Village is a learning facility with a library, pottery museum and early Showa period farmhouse as a base for handing down the culture of the town. Visitors can learn about unique urban planning and culture through the exhibition of tools and daily necessities used by soy sauce brewers, ship builders, blacksmiths and others. In addition to regular pottery classes, the museum also offers one-day pottery workshops such as forming pottery by hand instead of using a potter's wheel, slab building, and making a pottery lathe."

This museum has a very nice collection. It is worth seeing, but unfortunately, the descriptions is only written in japanese so you might want to ask your friends for translation.

Yamaguchi prefecture, along with Iwate and Kochi, is one of Japan's top fossil producing areas. This fossil museum, about a five-minute walk from Mine Station, is exhibiting with a focus on the themes of vertebrates, ammonites and insects which are likely to be interested among the various fossils produced. The exhibits offer a more sensuous experience so that even children can easily learn about the fossils. They also offer the experiential learning program digging fossils from raw stone.

化石採掘をしたかったのですが、美祢市でディキノドンが発見され、しばらく閉鎖に。せっかくなのでこちらの見学をさせていただきました。何億年前の・・・とか、このあたりでヒョウやトラの化石が発掘・・・とか、普段考えることのない地球生誕の神秘の謎に意識がタイムスリップし、悠々たる時空間を漂っているような、とてもいい時間が過ごせました。次回は自分で採掘したいです。
