Sapporo Maruyama Zoo is located around 15 minutes’ drive from JR Sapporo Station, and around 7 minutes’ journey on the shuttle bus service from Maruyama Koen Station on the Sapporo Subway’s Tozai Line. The philosophy behind the development of the Zoo was to create linkages between people, animals and the environment, and this is reflected in programs to help people learn about the importance of animal life and the environment, experiential activities at the Zoo’s animal hospital, and tours of the Zoo led by volunteer guides. The Zoo has more than 150 different mammal and reptile species.

Small zoo but has some highlights:Penguin parade, polar bears, owls and many Hokkaido native animals. Some animals have small living spaces and dont seem very happy.

This historic museum has preserved the former Abashiri Prison barracks as an outdoor museum. It was completely renovated in 2010. The virtual prison movie titled ''Forests Where Inmates in a Red Prison Uniform Worked'' is a must-see digital stereophonic theater experience focusing on the harsh working conditions of the erstwhile prisoners captured with the latest technology. One can explore the facility on a Guided Prison Tour, or actually eat the food the prisoners were given with the Experience Prison Food encounter. Two of the structures, 8 wards, transferred here are treasured as Japan's Important Cultural Properties.

Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art opened in 1977 near downtown Sapporo. It runs its activities based on the themes of Hokkaido’s regional and international characteristics. In addition to the Modern Art Collection Exhibition, which features the museum’s collection from a variety of angles, it plans and holds special exhibitions to introduce outstanding works from Japan and overseas. It has also undertaken some unique initiatives such as running traveling art museums all around Hokkaido.

This museum, just a 10-minute walk in the direction of the Otaru Canal from Otaru Station, houses a collection of Otaru's history and nature artifacts. The main depository is located just a 20-minute walk beyond the museum, for which the museum combination admission ticket is valid for 2 days. The Canal Museum was built in 1893, and redesigned from the treasured stone masonry Former Otaru Warehouse, making the museum itself a highly valued asset. In the museum, a life-size replicated broad street of Otaru during its heyday, the Taisho period (1912-1926), is on display where one can enjoy using the old-fashioned telephone and the organ.

Based on my pre-study of the recommended sightseeing routes, we first visited Otaru General Museum Unga-kan (Canal Museum). The museum occupies the northern section of a timber-framed stone storage...

Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum has the biggest projection mapping in Hokkaido and displays the mysterious creatures such as the clione which live in the Sea of Okhotsk. This garden comprised of expansive flower fields extends along Tokachiheiya’s rural area in the outskirts of Obihiro. This park was created when gardener Akiyo Shichiku was 63 years old. Shichiku, who has a long-standing love of flowers, felt that she wanted to create a landscape where the wildflowers she played in as a child would bloom. All of the plants inside the 4,950 square meters of land that includes assorted trees from Hokkaido such as Japanese white birch and magnolia as well as more than 2,500 types of flowers were planted by Shichiku, and seeing the appearance of the garden change each season is a soothing sight to behold. The park has a restaurant and a horticulture shop.

After walking the garden, it was a nice break for tea and scones. Let be the pumpkin scone and the cream taste great. The tea set was lovely and the view out into the garden was great.

Established as a branch of Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the museum is known as ""Mima"" by its many aficionados. Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
