This public zoo in Noichicho, Konan City, Kochi Prefecture, is characteristic for the way in which the animals are kept in an environment which closely resembles their natural habitat. The zoo is divided into separate areas such as the Temperate Forest, the Tropical Forest, the Africa and Australia Zone, and the Jungle Museum, where lots of different animals such as otters, lesser pandas, giraffes, kangaroos, and shoe-billed storks live quite contently. The Children’s Zoo, where children can get hands-on with the guinea pigs and ponies is also popular.

のいち動物園は広くて、めっちゃ楽しかった。動物達をよく観ることができて、皆元気そうでした。また是非訪ねます。 Noichi Zoo was really awesome. Surprisingly spacious! I’ll be sure to visit again! Nagyon király hely, nagyon tágas! Biztosan megyünk még!

The gardens of Giverny in France so loved by the impressionist painter Claude Monet have been replicated in Kitagawa Village, Aki County, Kochi Prefecture. Here in the vast gardens are some 100,000 plants. Different scenes can be enjoyed throughout the four seasons where visitors can delight in the Flower Garden with flowers blooming throughout the year, the Water Garden which features in replica form Monet’s memorable series of works, the Water Lilies, as well as the Light Garden which is based on Monet’s expedition to the Mediterranean Sea. From about June each year the lush blue water lilies, which were said never to have bloomed for Monet until the end, are an exceptional sight. There is also an observatory, a restaurant, and shop.

So very pretty. This is not a copy of the garden at Giverny, but rather a garden that recreates the feel and scenes of Monets paintings. I was fortunate enough to visit in August, when the...

The Ino-Cho Paper Museum is a specialist paper museum located approximately 10 minutes’ walk from Ino Station (on the JR Dosan Line). The Museum was opened in 1985 with the aim of helping to revitalize the production of Tosa Washi (Tosa traditional handmade paper), one of Japan’s traditional handicrafts. The permanent exhibitions include displays on the history of Washi traditional paper, the related cultural traditions, the materials and tools used to make Washi paper, etc. There are also papermaking demonstrations and opportunities to try your hand at making paper yourself. Special exhibitions are held on ongoing basis. It costs 400 yen to have a go at making two sheets of colored paper or eight postcards in the Papermaking Experience Corner. The papermaking experience activity takes around one hour; groups of 10 or more people are requested to book in advance.

It was an interesting tour, learning about Japanese paper but I had no interest prior to the tour. Watching the demonstration was the best part.

The SEASIDE GALLERY is not hosted in a building. At this museum along the Irino Beach spreading in front of Kuroshio Nakamura Line’s Tosa Irino Station, nature and people as a whole are the “work.” Irino Beach is a vast sandy area about four kilometers long and 200 meters wide that has been chosen as one of Japan’s top beaches for its rich natural landscape. It hosts events like the “T-shirt art exhibition” where about 1,000 T-shirts are hung along the beach, and the “National Seaside Barefoot Marathon” where participants run barefoot across the sand.
