Dooshel is a bakery located in Kamataki, Kimino Town, Kaiso County. The bakery sells different kinds of bread made with seasonal Wakayama fruits and home-grown wheat. They also serve lunch and drinks in the cafe. The views from their unique location on top of the hill are also part of its charm.

    Wakayama Pref. Tanabeshi Nakahechichouchikatsuyu 203
This privately-owned café in the heart of the mountains in Nakahechi Town, Tanabe City, Wakayama, operates out of a 100-year-old Japanese home. The female Osakan owner provides a warm atmosphere. Their plate lunches which use plenty of brown rice and pesticide-free vegetables, as well as their homemade bread made with natural yeast, are very popular, drawing many fans from far and wide. Their natural yeast bread is also available to take-out.

We found this great small resto by asking some locals, a lunch stop off the Kumano Kodo trail. Excellent set lunch meal, fresh flavors, brightly colored and carefully served. Its not so easy to...

A Japanese confectionary shop established in 1951 located in front of the torii gate of the Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine in Hongu Town, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture. The shop’s Kumano-mode-mochi rice cakes are often eaten by shrine visitors before worshipping at the shrine; simple in flavor, they consist of sweet an bean paste wrapped in mochi pounded rice and dusted with brown rice flour. The perfect place to take a break, Chincho-an also serves matcha green tea and mehari-zushi rice balls in pickled mustard leaves, a local dish, while still warm. Inside, the shop has a modern and quiet atmosphere with tables for customers.

You’ll find this teahouse in the “Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings” in Yuasa Town, Arida County, Wakayama Prefecture. It was built in an old residence from around the end of the Edo period to the start of the Meiji period. The nostalgic earthen floor interior is always filled with music and has shelves with nearly 2,000 books. In addition to handmade cakes and Japanese sweets, there’s also homemade curry and rice, udon, and other popular dishes. You can bring in grilled fish and sashimi bought from the Kusuyama shop two doors down. Add them to the “rice set” that features Kinzanji miso and miso soup to create an original set meal.

    Wakayama Kainan-shi Kuroe 680
"This cafe is in a refurbished lacquer artisan's town house from the Edo period. Their meals come served in the lacquerware you'd expect from a town where it was a major industry. Their dark black beef “Kuroe Curry"" is named after the area and gets its distinctive curry powder from a blend of bamboo charcoal and budo-sansho Japanese pepper from Kainan City and Kimino Town. They use wild rice. They also sell lacquerware, display it in their gallery, and hold Negoro lacquerware polishing workshops."
