The Sanada Treasure Museum opened in 1966 to display the various battle articles and furniture handed over by the 12th-generation head of the Sanada household, Koji Sanada. Among the exhibited items are the “Aoe war sword,” considered an Important Cultural Property, the “Nobori Hashigo armor used by Masayuki Sanada, documents from Takeda Shingen, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Ishida Mitsunari, and Tokugawa Ieyasu, and more for a collection of about 50,000 articles total. Exhibitions are rotated four times a year, and there are workshops and other experiences as well. It’s about 10 minutes from the Nagano Interchange on the Joshin-Etsu Expressway.

Located in “Togakureryu Ninja Town” Togakushi, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, this experience-based amusement park is based on ninjas and ninjutsu. With trick houses, ninja manors and other buildings, there’s also field athletics that constitute ninja training, like “water-spider technique.” There’s enough for kids and adults to have a fun time. The Nagano Prefectural Museum of History mainly collects, repairs, and stores buried cultural properties and documents of historical value that contain research and such related to Nagano Prefecture’s history. The exhibits teach visitors about both old and modern ways of life, and there are many special exhibits as well that disseminate a lot of historical information. They also host lectures on archaeology and ancient documents. It’s about a 25-minute walk from Yashiro Station and Yashirokoko-mae Station on the Shinano Railway, or five minutes by car from the Koshoku Interchange on the Nagano Expressway.

This is an activity-based museum in Togakushi, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture, where one can learn about the famous Togakushi Soba through buckwheat pounding and the displayed articles. In the hour-long pounding experience a soba expert carefully teaches participants the process from kneading buckwheat flower to cutting the noodles into thin strips. It is possible to take home the noodles one has made or eat them there in the building. The museum uses models and real articles to introduce Togakushi soba history and culture in an easy-to-understand way. There is a free-to-use 50-meter-tall slide on the viewing platform, making it a popular place for children too.

トイレを探していた時に「そば打ち道場」という看板が目に入って、昼時だったので寄ってみました。生徒さんが打ったそばなのか麺の太さがバラバラで茹で上がった硬さもマチマチだったのが印象的でした。食事の支払いが売店の方でクレジットカードで支払いさせて貰えたのは好印象。

The comprehensive museum exhibits materials related to areas such as geology, history and ethnology. The permanent exhibit introduces the history of the Nagano Basin and from the stone age to the Middle Ages and later with videos, ceramics and other items They also hold various kinds of special exhibitions. Nagano Chikuma-shi Togura 1855-1

Several famous breweries and a portion of their storehouses which produced countless liters of seishu refined sake. There are also four museums - the Kaya Shirao-kan, Yumeji Kaiga-kan, Shuzo Shiryoshitsu, and Hokkoku Kaido Rekishi Shiryoshitsu. The current oldest brewery was established in the Horeki era, and there are also breweries from the Kansei, Keio, Meiji, and Taisho eras; visitors may freely view the breweries, as well. Portions of the museum exhibits are changed on a seasonal basis, and reviews note this is a valuable space where one can learn about folk culture.

The Shinshu Shinmachi Museum is a one-minute walk from the Bijutsukan Mae bus stop or a 40-minute drive from the Nagano Interchange. It is next to the Shinshu Shinmachi Fossil Museum and the Arishima Ikuma Museum. Visitors can buy a single ticket that admits them to all three museums. The more than 2600 works in the collection were all received from the artists or as gifts from donors. Among the most prominent works in the museum are watercolors of local scenery by Shin Kurihara and 200 woodblock prints by Kishio Koizumi, some of whose works are also in the Louvre. The exhibits are changed every few months.

Hachimanpara Historic Park was built on the site of the Kawanakajima Kosenjo battlefield, famous for the battle between Takeda Shigen and Uesugi Kenshin. Located at the border of Niigata Prefecture and Nagano Prefecture, it is the 32nd national park in Japan. There are many sights in the area with numerous famous mountains including Mt. Amakazari, Mt. Myoko, and Mt. Hiuchi, which are ranked in Japan’s top 100 famous mountains. There are also highlights such as Otari hot spring, a health resort with a history of more than 450 years, and Togakushi Shrine, famous for the Heavenly Iwato legend. Rare birds such as the blue-and-white flycatcher, one of Japan’s top three singing birds, and the Japanese rock ptarmigan which is designated by the national government as a Special Natural Monument inhabit the area. Myoko-Togakushi renzan National Park area is also one of Japan’s heavy snowfall areas, and there are also many ski resorts.

This museum, attached to the Shinshu-Shinmachi Museum of Art, was opened in December 1993 with the donation of the late Isamu Nishizawa's fossil collection of approximately 6,000 fossils from Shinshu-Shinmachi, Nagano. The museum exhibits a wide variety of fossils from 53 countries and materials related to the geological strata in the Shinshu-Shinmachi area, including the collections mentioned above.

This park is famous for its 300 Yoshino cherry trees which bloom from mid- to late April. The sight of the flowering trees, planted around the banks of two ponds in the park, is gorgeous. Appropriate to an area with a mountain where tengu goblins live according to legend, a 9.5 meter tall statue of a tengu, the largest in Japan, stands inside this park. The park is also a renowned destination for cherry blossom viewing. In mid-April, the area around the Chikuma Tengu statue becomes covered with pink blossoms, and visitors can enjoy taking in the beautiful flowers as well as the scenery of the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen hot spring district. In mid-March, visitors can also see Eranthis pinnatifida, a flowering plant designated a vulnerable species.

Nagano Chikuma-shi Kamiyamada Onsen

One of the parks located in the Togura Kamiyamada Onsen area. Situated along the Shinano River, the park sprawls near the Manyo Bridge. 27 monuments inscribed with poems about Nagano from the ancient Manyoshu poetry anthology to today stand in the park and visitors can enjoy visiting each. Some of the monuments are inscribed with characters written in the hands of the authors, such as Kobayashi Issa and Kyoshi Takahama.

An apricot park where rare ancient varieties of apricots have been transported an old Japanese home has been restored to recreate once lost local scenery. The park's grounds encompass a waterway where fireflies can be seen and an old well and Japanese home. Inside the home building, there is a rest area with an old-fashioned irori sunken hearth; paintings and dyed and woven items by local artists are also on display here. The park's gifts and souvenirs, made with local apricots, are also popular.
