There are shops, the Hakodate Beer Hall and more in the Kanemori Youbutsukan and Hakodate Street Plaza, and BAY Hakodate has cafes and a chapel. There are four separate areas which are the Farm Village, the Sea Village, the Mountain Village and the City and you can walk through each village to experience the different atmospheres. An excellent village! We were on a tour with a guide, but the best part was taking off our shoes and going into the buildings. My favourite was a personal shrine in one of the houses.

Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum has the biggest projection mapping in Hokkaido and displays the mysterious creatures such as the clione which live in the Sea of Okhotsk. At the highest observation terrace, 360-degree panoramic views are an amazing sight and have been designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty since 1938.

This aquarium is in Noboribetsu. Built on the theme of Northern European Romance and Marine Fantasies, the symbol of the park is its castle modeled on Denmark's Egeskov Castle. In addition to the dolphin and seal show pools, the penguin hall and the king penguin walking route in front of the castle are popular. There's also a petting pool where visitors can touch skates and horseshoe crabs, a Ferris wheel, merry go round and other attractions throughout the park.

This is not a big aquarium or zoo which you will make a beeline to, unless it’s a rainy day (as what we had). The space is an issue:it’s not just for the visitors but the resident. Think about two...

A safari park in Minami Ward, Sapporo City. Here you can get up close with many kinds of rare wild animals and reptiles. In the on-site Kitchen Savanna restaurant you can try some of their bizarre food such as fried geckos and fried coconut worms! They also have plenty of more usual foods on the menu so no need to worry! Opening times differ depending on the month so it’s worth checking first before you go.

An amusement park operating inside Rusutsu Resort. One of the largest amusement parks in Hokkaido, the park has some 60 attractions. This includes eight popular and exciting roller coasters. There are also less stimulating rides for children and those who don't like thrill rides. The park has much more to offer on top of this, including go-carts, a merry-go-round, a mini zoo, garden, and game arcade. There are indoor and outdoor pools, too. The park is closed due to snow in winter, and during this time extra maintenance is conducted on the rides and attractions.

This museum is located four minutes’ walk from JR Hakodate Station.

A museum opened in July 2007 which looks at the history and natural environment of Otaru City as well as science, technology, and the history of transportation on the island of Hokkaido. The museum is divided into two facilities—the Main Building and the Canal Museum. The Main Building has a permanent exhibit which presents the history of railroads in Hokkaido, including 50 preserved examples of major railway vehicles used on the island such as the Shizuka steam locomotive. The Main Building also has a planetarium and science exhibits and conducts simple experiments and short craft classes on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. In the summer, the Iron Horse, a steam engine built in the United States in 1909, is operated outside the museum, and visitors can ride the train for free.

This museum is only about trains. The museum was just ok, very little English info. I did really enjoy the train cars on display outside. Especially the snow plow trains. Its worth a visit.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
