- An outdoor dinosaur museum located in Katsuyama Dinosaur Forest Park in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture famous as one of the largest dinosaur fossil excavation sites in Japan. The grounds are divided into three zones—a viewing area where you can see the fossil excavation site up close, an exhibition hall where you can learn about the fossils found here and the techniques used, and an area where you can experience what it’s like to excavate a fossil yourself. Visiting the site is a tour-only affair. You can reserve a tour in advance, and same-day tour tickets are also sold on a first come, first serve basis. A dedicated bus is used to get to the site which can be boarded in front of the Fukui Prefectural Dinosaur Museum.

- This aquarium is located within Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. It is near the scenic spot Tojinbo. There are several exhibits where visitors can observe and interact with marine and waterside life up close, as well as shows and feeding events. There’s a large “ocean fish tank” containing a school of nearly 3,000 sardines, as well as a “coral sea” featuring a water tank underneath the glass floor, making it feel like you’re walking on the surface. Visitors can also watch penguins swim from an underwater tunnel and swim along with the fish in the “jabu jabu ocean pool.”
-
Entrance fee is a bit expensive, almost 2000 yen per person, but a discount can be had with a coupon. Check their website for any coupons before going. A great aquarium once inside, with many...

- The Fukui Prefectural Museum of Cultural History is a museum in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture that is dedicated to the history and industrial heritage of the Fukui region. The authentic artifacts on display and the section dedicated to the period from the mid-1950s through to the early 1970s are of particular interest. In the “Life in the Showa Period” corner, which recreates life in both rural communities and towns in that era, there is plenty to inspire nostalgia among visitors who remember those times, including a reconstruction of a traditional farmhouse and of a Dagashiya (traditional Japanese sweet shop). The lighting, sound effects and other aspects of the displays are changed with the seasons, further enhancing the experience for visitors to the Museum. The Museum is around 10 minutes’ drive from JR Fukui Station.

- Opened in 1985, the Sabae City Nishiyama Zoo has made great strides in raising and breeding rare wild animals, particularly the red panda. This zoo is one of the few in the country to successfully breed red pandas. Red pandas don’t like the heat so you can’t see them much in summer, but there are live cameras placed inside and outside the red panda house, so you can see them in all their cuteness.
-
I took a quick side-trip to the zoo (which is tiny) but it has a bunch (a dozen?) red pandas in separate enclosures. There are also some showy pheasants and peacocks and some spider monkeys, but...
