    Yo-Roppaken is the restaurant that, back in 1913, created the first “Sosu Katsudon” (a bowl of rice with a breaded and fried pork cutlet on top, served with Worcestershire sauce), the result of intensive experimentation by the restaurant owner (who had encountered Worcestershire sauce while working in Germany) to develop cuisine using Worcestershire sauce that would appeal to Japanese palates; today, “Sosu Katsudon” is a famous Fukui specialty dish. Other popular dishes at Yo-Roppaken include Pari Don (which uses menchi-katsu—a fried cake of minced meat—instead of a pork cutlet) and Shrimp Don. Yo-Roppaken is located around eight-minute drive from JR Tsuruga Station.

    This venerable soba restaurant opened in 1871. Their handmade soba noodles made with buckwheat flour made in the prefecture are boiled to order. We recommend their oroshisoba (soba noodles topped with grated daikon radish), which combines their springy and substantial thick-cut noodles with a carefully-selected seasonal blend of four varieties of grated daikon radish. Their arabiki oroshisoba (soba with roughly grated daikon radish), which is only available from April to November, is also quite popular.

You can also get “oroshi soba” (buckwheat noodles served with grated Japanese radish on top), a soul food of Fukui.

    A long-standing curry and coffee shop. They were in the Katamachi area for over 50 years but moved due to renovation of the surrounding buildings. They moved to their current location just a few years ago. They brought much of their interior design including their chandelier and chairs with them from the old location so the inner atmosphere of the shop is unchanged. And of course their menu is still the same allowing you to enjoy their classic slow-stewed western-style curry.

    ご夫婦でやっていらっしゃるカレー屋さん。カレーの味がとても美味しいです。こじんまりとしていて、レトロな店内です。

    This restaurant serves handmade soba noodles made exclusively with buckwheat flour from Fukui Prefecture. They use a 10:1 buckwheat flour to filler ratio in order to preserve the fragrance of the buckwheat. Their stock is made with Rishiri kombu kelp, thick-sliced katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes) from Makurazaki and other five ingredients. The restaurant offers a choice of two styles of noodle: thick-cut noodles, which every springy texture; and thin-cut noodles, which go down silky-smooth. Their most popular item is their cold oroshisoba, a specialty of the Echizen region that consists of soba noodles served with a dipping sauce containing grated daikon radish. Their kakiage soba, which is served with a hearty tempura fritter made with domestic scallops, is also popular.

    10年以上前から、ここのたらこクリームパスタは最高です。クリームはとっても濃厚で、たらこからでる海の風味もしっかりしています。店内はしっとりとムードある感じですが、夜も子連れで大丈夫です。とろとろオムライスも、世間で一般的になる何十年も前から、ここではだしていて、こちらもボリュームがあり味も大満足です。
