A “yoshoku” Japanese-style Western cuisine restaurant established in 1957 located in Kata-machi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Grill Otsuka is said to be one of the restaurants which invented hanton rice, a local Kanazawa specialty dish. A hearty dish, hanton rice is ketchup rice wrapped in a semi-soft omelet, topped with deep fried breaded tuna and shrimp, and covered with ketchup and a homemade tartar sauce. In part thanks to its atmosphere reminiscent of the good, old days of the Showa period, Grill Otsuka is frequently featured in travel magazines.

This is a small restaurant that has become famous for one dish:hanton rice, similar to omu-rice but with a seafood twist. We had the signature dish and we all enjoyed it, except for my daughter who...

    Ishikawa Pref. Kanazawashi Higashiyama 1-6-6
Located at the entrance to Higashi Chaya District in the Higashiyama district of Kanazawa City, Jiyuken is a long-established Yoshoku (Japanese-style Western food) restaurant that was founded in 1909. Jiyuken serves proper, old-fashioned Yoshoku using recipes (such as a special demi-glace sauce) that have been handed down through the generations since the restaurant was first established. The rice omelet, made by frying rice and meat seasoned a soy-sauce-based sauce and then wrapping it inside a fried egg, has consistently been the most popular item on the menu. The lunchtime set meal (also available at dinnertime), which includes four Jiyuken favorites—home-made hamburgers, sautéed pork, potato croquettes, and fried shrimp in béchamel sauce—is also very popular.

I would say it’s a pretty good place for lunch. The Omurice is cheap and unique because the restaurant used rice with soy sauce instead of ketchup. Cream croquette is delicious. Hayashi rice is...

  • Flatt's Noto
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Ishikawa Hosu-gun Notocho Yanami 27-26-3
This small inn, operated by an Australian chef and the Noto-born proprietress, accommodates just four groups of guests a day. It is situated on a hill in Yanami on the Noto Peninsula, and on clear days, guests can see all the way the Sea of Japan to the Tateyama Mountain Range. All of the inn's rooms are Japanese-style, and everything about the establishment, from the wooden beams spanning the ceiling to the views of the sea and the inn's Japanese garden visible from the windows, exudes a faintly nostalgic air. There's also a handmade outdoor bath in a corner of the garden where guests can soak and take in a view of the ocean sprawling into the distance. For food, the inn serves Italian cuisine made with local seasonings and ingredients from Ishikawa Prefecture. The inn takes great pride in hospitality which enables guests to truly experience Noto - for example, works of art by local artists are displayed in the guest rooms and dining room.

A restaurant which serves Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture-style curry, a local favorite. The restaurant's standard is rice completely covered with thick, rich curry topped with a thick-cut breaded pork cutlet and shredded cabbage. In addition to the standard breaded pork cutlet, the restaurant offers a variety of other toppings, such as tender mille-feuille cutlets, slow-stewed beef tendon, and omelet curry topped with an omelet.

Finally, I have the chance to try the Kanazawa curry and I’m not disappointed. The pork is savory and the curry is delicious. However, it’s a little bit dry compared to a normal curry and rice...

A 10-minute drive from Kanazawa Station. This steakhouse is located in Korinbo Tokyu Square, a shopping mall within walking distance of Kanazawa Castle Park and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. Surrounded by the restaurant’s dazzling atmosphere, a chef will energetically turn choice, top quality ingredients into a delicious meal right before your eyes. The restaurant serves Noto beef, a variety of Japanese black beef raised amidst the natural beauty, mountains, and sea of Noto; only a few hundred head of this rare beef are shipped each year. Compared with other brand name beef varieties, Noto beef has slightly less marbling, instead boasting an outstanding quantity of the oleic acid, an indicator of its excellent flavor. As you chat with the chef at the counter, you are encouraged to enjoy your steak with a house soy-based sauce or a secret recipe chili sauce.

We were staying in the Kanazawa Tokyu Hotel just above, and after a long day’s travel, it was easy to walk downstairs. We needed a booking, at 8pm, and we were almost the last folks in there! Still...

This studio focuses on using wood from the Shishiku area. The facility is broadly divided into two areas - a wood studio and a food studio. The wood studio operates as a wood crafts store owned by a lumber dealer which has been in business for over a century. The studio sells a wide variety of items and also regularly holds woodworking workshops. The food studio operates as a pizzeria and bakes pizzas using a big brick firewood oven. The food studio also offers a large selection of other dishes, including pastas and desserts.

This is one of my favourite restaurants in the area. The food is always good with very kind service. The building is completely made from wood, and is really romantic.

A long-standing bistro situated on the bank of the Asano River. The restaurant's Western-style building was constructed in 1923 and is a landmark in the Higashi Chaya District. The restaurant interior still retains many touches dating back to the period when the building was built. The first floor has counter seating and tables, while the second floor is a private dining room with an old-fashioned atmosphere. Here you can enjoy authentic French cuisine made with select ingredients. The restaurant offers different, but equally delicious, lunch and dinner menus. During lunch, the restaurant serves primarily dishes like curry and hamburg steaks made with Noto beef and pork. For dinner, you can eat dishes made with seafood from Kanazawa Port.

This hidden-away French restaurant located in Katamachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture offers Kanazawa-style courses which use Hokuriku seafood. Local ingredients evoke the rich local landscape, primarily items from the Sea of Japan acquired from nearby markets and Noto fisherman, but also wild game and organic vegetables from nearby farms. The French cuisine meticulously made by a Burgundy-trained chef is popular for dinner on special occasions like anniversaries or celebrations. The chic accents give the interior a relaxed feel, one that you can enjoy with a glass of wine.

This French restaurant is located in Sennichi Town, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It operates from an old townhouse along the Saigawa River. It is a famous restaurant, which was featured in the Michelin Guide Toyama-Ishikawa-Kanazawa 2016 special edition. The vegetables in the restaurant’s dishes, which use pesticide-free vegetables and garden-grown herbs, are very popular. Inside the restaurant where customers can hear the sounds of the river, they can enjoy authentic French cuisine that sticks to both taste and appearance.

"A meat cuisine restaurant which was the first to receive Noto Beef Certification located next to Masuhogaura Beach, location of the ""longest bench in the world."" The restaurant only uses safe and healthy domestic beef with a particular focus on rare Noto beef. On the first floor, the restaurant has table seating, perfect for families and enjoying a steak. In the second-floor tatami mat seating area, you can eat teppanyaki and nabe hotpot. The most recommended item on the menu is the Noto beef sirloin steak, notable for its hearty texture, flavor, and body. The restaurant's portions of Noto beef are limited and as such all Noto beef dishes require an advance reservation. Customers are encouraged to make a reservation before coming."

The menu consists of multi-course meals, including meals in which suitable wines are paired with each course.

You can enjoy lunch or steaks in the restaurant's table seating area and yakiniku Japanese-style grill-it-yourself barbecue and shabushabu hotpot in the tatami mat seating area. The restaurant is notable for its use of Noto beef, a variety of Japanese beef that can only be called ""Noto beef"" if it is certified by the Japan Meat Grading Association. The restaurant's specialty ""Noto Beef Foie Gras Steak"" has been featured on television. As only a few portions are available on any given day, an advance reservation is recommended. The restaurant also offers a variety of seasonal and location-only dishes ensuring you'll never get tired of the cuisine no matter how many times you dine here."

The cozy restaurant's interior, painted white and accented with orange, creates a warm and friendly atmosphere. Both lunch and dinner are reservation only. The restaurant's menu consists of course meals only. The food the restaurant serves depends on the seasonal vegetables, meats, and seafoods stocked that day. As befits the restaurant's modern, creative cuisine, the tableware used is also beautifully designed and a delight for the eye.

Serving original, French-based course cuisine, both lunch and dinner are omakase (chef’s choice). Diners are also encouraged to savor the chef’s taste in wines, chosen specifically to go with the restaurant’s cuisine and primarily consisting of domestic Japanese vintages. "A French and Italian restaurant located in a forest on the grounds of the Shika-no-Sato Resort. Dedicated to local production for local consumption, the restaurant serves dishes made with an abundance of fresh local produce and delicious local seafood selected personally by the owner in the market. The restaurant's pastas made with seasonal ingredients are particularly recommended and one of the standout favorites is the ""Unibonara"" -springy al dente pasta covered with a rice sea urchin sauce. The lunch menu consists of course dishes only, while dinner is both course and a la carte dishes. For both lunch and dinner, the entire restaurant is non-smoking."

"This Italian restaurant is about 15 minutes' drive from Kanazawa Station. The name means ""departure"" in Italian, and this shop uses local ingredients prepared in Tuscan style to help spread the region's food culture. Their menu is designed around the idea of cooking as processing, and all the ingredients are bought personally by the shop owner for true local production for local consumption. The shop's cooking brings out the flavor of their natural ingredients with as little artificial flavoring as possible. They express local and hometown Italian cooking cooked simply to bring out the flavors of local ingredients."

"A restaurant where you can enjoy Kanazawa-style curry, a local favorite, amidst the beautiful lattice bay windows and stone paving of the old-fashioned Higashi Chaya District. Designed around the concept of Japan's old nostalgic ""Yoshoku"" Western cuisine restaurants, the establishment has a laid back, retro atmosphere. The restaurant's standard ""Indian Curry,"" domestic rice served in a stainless steel bowl and topped with plenty of curry and shredded cabbage, is one of the origins of modern Kanazawa-style curry. Particularly popular menu selections include the tonkatsu breaded pork cutlet curry, a Kanazawa-style curry staple; and the restaurant's signature vegetable and egg-topped curry."

Highlights of the seaside towns lining the west coast include Kanazawa, often described as a "Little Kyoto" thanks to its old wooden tea houses and geisha culture as well as its picturesque Japanese garden, Kenroku-en.
