Okinawa Pref. Ishigakishi Misakichou 12-8 TOMO Bldg. 1F
This famous bar is in front of the Ishigaki city hall and has been featured in several magazines and local newspapers. Open the front door and you’ll be greeted by a hall bathed in blue light that looks like an underwater tunnel, with the calm atmosphere of the bar waiting just beyond. The cocktails use select ingredients produced on the Yaeyama Islands, allowing you to enjoy the rich natural tastes of Ishigaki Island.

Located in Nakijin Village in Kunigami County, this Japanese-style pub will make you feel like you’ve been transported back to the Showa period. The retro atmosphere is made more vibrant by the patrons, many of whom are foreign and of all ages. The dishes are mainly Okinawan, such as seared Nakijin beef and papaya chanpuru (Okinawan stir fry, only available during certain periods). One surprising feature is the faucet at each table that dispenses awamori (millet brandy), which is available for use if you get the three-hour all-you-can-drink course. With private rooms and tatami seating also available, there’s something to suit everyone’s needs.

Glad that I made it to this beautiful and lively restaurant. Even the front door looks appealing!~ This place serves Okinawan dishes such as umi-budo, tofu and sashimi. All the food in the menu...

  • Nanto Syokurakuen
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Okinawa Pref. Shimajirigunkumejimachou Higa 160-81
Original cuisine and Okinawa cooking using ingredients from Kume Island are offered at this Japanese-style pub. Sample fish caught off the coast of the island are served in the sashimi platter. Japanese leek, purple yam, goya, and other ingredients figure in the “island vegetable tempura,” and there's also “Agu pork green onion and salt stir-fry” and several other menu options. You can hire someone to drive your vehicle for you anywhere on the island for 1,000 yen, which means you can enjoy all the awamori (millet brandy) you please. The establishment is located diagonally opposite from the Resort Hotel Kume Island.

Experience local Kume Island cuisine at this restaurant. The food is made using local ingredients, including fresh fish caught from the harbor every day. Recommended dishes include the “Kume Island butter-fried Japanese tiger prawn” and “Kume Island grilled soba.” A variety of Kume Island cooking is available for visitors to enjoy. The restaurant’s location along Eef Beach Street makes it easy to access.

Visited Umibozu for dinner on our 3rd night out of 4. After eating at Kameyoshi and Namiji, we thought it was on par. Each restaurant has its characteristics but so far Umibozu, Kameyoshi and Namiji...

Sakaemachi Bottle Neck is an Izakaya (bar-restaurant) located in Sakaemachi Arcade. It was apparently the first Izakaya to open in Sakaemachi Arcade, which is famous for retaining the atmosphere of Showa-era Okinawa. Sakaemachi Bottle Neck's famous Okinawa Soba noodles are served in a unique way, with the broth being added to the noodles using an aluminum kettle.

It is popular not only among locals but also tourists. It is attractive as staff create an atmosphere that allows you to enjoy conversations with unfamiliar customers on the same table, watch food preparation in the kitchen from the counter seats as well as talking with the cheerful staff. The closest station is Miebashi Station on Yui Rail.

The meal was fantastic and the staff were very welcoming. Wish this restaurant was in my home town as I would be a frequent visitor. We speak little Japanese and the staff did their best to help us...

Location Dining Nagi near Cape Maeda in Onna Village, Okinawa Prefecture is a hideaway dining venue which boasts views. You can enjoy a food menu that includes Okinawan cuisine and alcohol such as awamori (an Okinawan distilled spirit). On a clear day, you can see the sun setting into the horizon and a night sky full of stars from the restaurant and the terrace seating. Thanks to the romantic atmosphere, it is a popular place of dates. Namiji located on “Ifu Beach”, a beach which is the emblem of Kume Island, is a restaurant with a homely atmosphere. You can enjoy reasonably priced Okinawan cuisine such as a diver’s dish and sushi using fresh seafood, and various other types of dishes. The recommended dish of the day and the homemade fish cake made from minced fish caught in the neighboring sea are popular. It sells delicatessens and lunch boxes at lunchtime.

This bar is where you can taste seasonal seafood and local dishes from Ishigaki Island. Their tuna sushi, which is a set with two fresh otoro and chutoro tuna sushi each and a thin tuna sushi roll is recommended. Besides sushi, there is also a large number of a la carte dishes, and the shop requires a reservation. It is highly accessible because it is located within walking distance of the city area.

In addition to their otoro and chutoro, there are countless recommended items including gunkan-maki (oval-shaped sushi wrapped with nori seaweed) with tuna and sea grapes, lightly broiled otoro with ponzu sauce, and their sashimi of the day. Making a reservation is recommended because it is a popular store.

  • Yanbaru Dining Matsu no Kominka
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Okinawa Pref. Nagoshi Ominami 2-14-5
This restaurant is where you can fully enjoy a good old Okinawan kominka (old house) built 60 years ago. Their black Agu pork shabu-shabu, with only five servings available each day, is excellent and very popular. They have an extensive side menu with limited quantities of sashimi made only when fresh fish are in stock, mozuku seaweed, sea grapes and Okinawa Shallots. They are many recommendations such as their “Mega Grill Neck Bacon” steak with Yanbaru pork, and smoked Yanbaru chicken.

Okinawa Main Areas

around-area-map

Let go of your image of a busy, ordered Japan and replace it with crystal-clear waters, white sand beaches, and relaxing folk music: You've arrived in Okinawa. A world away from the high intensity of Tokyo, Okinawans appear to live a laid-back beach life on this paradisiacal tropical island that lies in the middle of the East China Sea almost 1,000 kilometers south of mainland Japan's most southern tip. Home to a spattering of islands, prepare yourself to discover underwater caves, star-shaped sand, and an island culture sometimes unrecognizable from mainland Japan.
