    Kochi Kochi-shi Takajomachi 2-4-65
Fujinami Shrine was built on the grounds of Kochi Castle by the 10th feudal lord Toyokazu in 1806. It honors Kazutoyo and his wife Kenshoin (Chiyo) as well as the second feudal lord Tadayoshi. A new shrine was built to honor the achievements of the 15th feudal lord Toyoshige and 16th feudal lord Toyonori, active at the end of the Edo period and during the Meiji restoration. It was completed in 1934, given its current name, and declared an Imperial Shrine of Special Status. It still honors the historic figures listed above.

This shrine is in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture. Legends say it was founded in 905, and its primary deities are Sugawara-no-Michizane, his eldest son Takami, and his wife. Since it's in the heart of Kochi City, it is the busiest shrine in the city around New Year's day with visitors coming for Hatsumode, the first prayer of the year. Its Romon tower gate is a designated Kochi City Cultural Asset, and the grounds hold a bull statue that is deeply connected to Michizane.

The only Shinto shrine in the country that deifies Chosokabe Motochika. It was founded in 1871 at the site of the original Sekkeiji Temple at the foot of Nagahama Castle's hill. Precious items it houses include a colored portrait of Chosokabe Motochika on silk (National Important Cultural Property), a seated image of Motochika (Kochi Prefecture Cultural Property), written copies of Chosokabe land survey records from the Nagahama district, a monument to the dead from the Hetsugigawa battle, and votive pictures dedicated by Yamauchi Tadayoshi.

    Kochi Kochi-shi Nagahama 6600

    Kochi Kochi-shi Harimayacho 3-chome 8-11

Kochi Areas

around-area-map

The largest of Shikoku’s prefectures, Kochi is endowed with some of the island’s most exceptional sand beaches lining the Pacific Ocean, which narrows into the Shimanto-gawa, a huge river that stretches 196 kilometers into the prefecture, passing verdant mountains and hosting countless riverside activities. Whether you’re a pilgrim or not, Kochi’s 16 Buddhist temples that make up one leg of the Shikoku Pilgrimage are worth a visit, particularly Chikurin-ji for its five-tier pagoda.
