This is a Shinto shrine located in Nara City. Kasuga Taisha Shrine is the grand head shrine of approximately 1,000 Kasuga shrines nationwide. The origins to the shrine lie in the early days of the Nara period, when Takemikazuchi-no-mikoto from Kashima-jingu Shrine was enshrined at Mt. Mikasa. The main shrine of the Kasuga structure which is a National Treasure has four buildings lined up, and in addition to the majestic and splendid south Gate and middle gate, there are many things such as fine and industrial art objects which have been designated as Important Cultural Properties. The Bantoro Festival (Lantern Festival) event is held on the day of Setsubun (Bean throwing night) and on the 14th and 15th of August when around 3,000 stone lanterns and hanging lanterns are lit with fire, and many worshipers come to look at this magical sight.

The local bus can bring you right to the shrine. The bus is a lot like a trolly and there are two companies. One is 220 yen per ride the other is 100 yen per ride. Otherwise, it’s a bit of a walk...

"A 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station and a 60-minute drive from the Kyoto-minami Interchange. This Shinto shrine is also located right next to the ""Himurojinja-Kokuritsuhakubutsukan"" bus stop. The shrine was originally dedicated to venerating Mt. Kasuga. From around 711, the shrine gifted blocks of ice created in a cold room to the imperial capital of Hejio-kyo (now Nara). After the capital was moved to Kyoto, the shrine was abolished and then later moved to its current location and revived. Even today, the shrine is still visited by persons involved in industries concerning ice, such as ice making, refrigeration, and freezing. Each year the shrine holds the Kenpyosai ice festival on May 1st, as well as the Himoruo Shirayuki Shaved Ice Festival in March. Visitors can also view beautiful weeping cherry blossoms on the grounds from late March to early April."

this is definitely a unique temple:the deity it honors is the ice god, which is why you may see little blocks of ice (lanterns) lining the front steps or the other pathways on the shrines grounds...

This is a shrine in Nara City. It is located in Tamukeyama which is famous as a beauty spot for its autumnal leaves, and it is built to the north of Tōdai-ji’s Hokke-do Hall (also called “Sangastu-do Hall”). Its origins lie in the summoning and enshrinement secured from Kyoto’s Usa Hachimangu Shrine which were the deities summoned to protect Tōdai-ji on the occasion of Tōdai-ji and the Great Buddha being built. The ancient log house structure of the treasure house was relocated from the master’s warehouse from Tōdai-ji’s oil storehouse in the Nara period, and it is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Also housed on the grounds of the temple are such a National Treasure as a “Chinese-style ritual saddle” and an Important Cultural Property like a “21 wooden bugaku theatre mask”.

A small, attractive shrine. I purchased my first goshuincho there, and the lady wrote something lovely that I cant yet read (my Japanese is limited!) in my book, so I was very pleased.

This is the country’s oldest Tenmangu shrine, which is said to be in the region that is the origin of the Sugawara clan and the birthplace of Sugawara no Michizane. It is dedicated to the deities Amenohohi, Nominosukune, and Sugawara no Michizane. About 100 meters northeast of the shrine is said to be the site of the pond where Michizane was born. Many events associated with Sugawara no Michizane are held here. For example, every year from early February until early March, about 200 plum bonsai trees consisting of about 130 species are put on display in the “plum bonsai exhibition,” and for the Vernal Equinox, a “writing brush festival” is held.

This shrine, said to have been built at the behest of Emperor Kanmu during the Enryaku period (circa 800 AD) is famous for its flowers of each season. In the springtime, there are marvelous sakura and peonies blooming. The Shusse Inari Shrine within the grounds is said to bind relationships together and when entreated, will bring about romance. The heart shaped votive tablets, love fortunes, and amulets are very cute.

This is a shrine located along the Yasuragi-no-Michi Street in Honkomoricho Town, Nara City. This shrine was established by Empress Suiko in 593, and is known as the oldest shrine in Nara City. The shrine is dedicated to Himetataraisuzuhime-no-Mikoto, the wife of Emperor Jinmu. Worshippers have prayed for the safety of children at the shrine since long ago as the parents of the Empress are dedicated as deities of the shrine as well. Nara's oldest Ebisu (God of commerce) Shrine is also in the precinct and many people visit the shrine to pray for success in business.

This shrine was built by the imperial order of Empress Suiko in 593 and enshrines Omononushi no Mikoto as the deity. The current main shrine built in the Momoyama period is designated as Prefectural Cultural Property. There is also a forest shrine enshrining Rinjyouin no Mikoto, the first person to bring manju, buns filled with sweet red bean jam, to Japan. As the only manju shrine in Japan, every year on the 19th of April, Manju Festival is held.

The Yasumigaoka Hachimangu shrine which protects Yakushiji Temple was ceremonially transferred along with its tutelary deity from Usa District in Oita Prefecture to its current location sometime between 889 and 898. The main hall and side halls were built on slightly elevated, stacked stone platforms. The sitting room located in the west side of the front yard, although heavily restored over the years, was built at nearly the same time as the main shrine in 1603, making it an historical and cultural heritage site.

This is a vermillion-lacquered large torii (Shinto shrine archway) which stands at the entrance to the approach road to Kasuga Shrine in Nara City. It stands at a height of 6.75 meters. As a type of Kasuga-style archway (it has distinct features such as a slight curvature of the under beams and top beams and thick column diameters), it has been designated as a Japanese Important Cultural Property. Even though the archway was first built in late Heian period, the present archway was reconstructed in 1638 and a large scale restoration was done at the 60th anniversary of this reconstruction.

Wakamiya-jinja Shrine is an auxiliary and subsidiary shrines of Kasuga Shrine, and it is the temple at the back of the “side road” lined with stone lanterns. It is called “Wakamiya” because it enshrines Kogami (“offspring kami”) of Hime no Kami, Ame-no-Oshikumone-no-mikoto who is the enshrined deity of Kasuga Shrine. It is the first temple in the Wakamiya tour of 15 shrines. The main hall has been designated as an Important Cultural Property, and has a similar Kasuga-zukuri style as the main shrine of Kasuga Taisha Shrine. It is known for holding the “Kasuga Wakamiya On-Matsuri” in December every year.

This Shinto shrine is located in Takabatake-cho, Nara City. Records state the shrine was established in 806 to serve as a guardian shrine of the Shinyakushi-ji Temple. The current main shrine building was once the third main shrine building of Kasugataisha Shrine, and was received as a gift from the latter shrine when it rebuilt its main shrine building as part of anniversary celebrations conducted in 1746. Accordingly, this main shrine building is of immense historical value, revealing what Kasugataisha Shrine looked like at that time.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
