    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Nishikyou-ku Katsurasaharachou 61
This is a historic Japanese confectionery store established in 1883 located right where you disembark at the Katsurarikyu-mae bus stop. This confectionery carries on the meticulous historic method of sweets making, sparing no expenses and using only discriminatingly selected domestic ingredients only, including making the bean paste in an earthen hearth. The specialty, Mugitemochi, was historically eaten by the local farmers as a snack through which the name is derived harkening back to times when wheat was a trade commodity. In the store space is shared as tea cafe also. In the summer, somen noodles and shaved ice is on the menu, while in the fall and winter they serve sweet zenzai and oshiruko bean soup.

    Kyoto Nagaokakyo-shi Nagaoka 2-28-40
The Japanese patisserie offers a variety of sweets, but focuses on their old fashioned Takenoko Monaka, a wafer and bamboo shoot snack which has won the gold medal at the National Snack Awards. This local snack uses Nagaokakyo city's specialty bamboo shoots stewed in a sweet broth, with their particular crisp texture and gentle sweetness balanced with the savory, house-made wafer coating. They have three types: Tamba Dainagon red bean, Kyoto Yuzu, and white azuki bean, and their cute round shape is quite popular. This shop makes its own sweet bean paste from carefully selected domestic beans, and wraps them with high quality batter to create Kouhaku Neko Manju buns. With their cute cat shapes, they're perfect for cat lovers, birthdays, and other celebrations.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
