    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku
This home was the residence of the Kashibara family, who were wealthy Kyoto merchants during Edo period. Located along Toiyamachi Street a five-minute walk from Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, the home is opened to the public twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. There, visitors can view Kashibara family heirlooms passed down since the Edo period on display. The lineage was founded by Kashibara Goemon, a retainer of Kato Kiyomasa, who was the lord of Higo Province (modern day Kumamoto). Starting as Kyoto sundries merchants, the family gradually expanded the scope and scale of their business over time, eventually owning a shop in Edo, which was a major status symbol for Kyoto merchants at the time. The diverse heirlooms on display include a wedding trousseau, paintings, calligraphy, tea utensils, and more. Of these items, the marriage trousseau considered to be especially precious. The current building, which has survived countless fires, still retains the appearance of a centuries-old merchant home. The home is one of the most precious buildings in Kyoto, a city with myriad historic buildings.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
