  • Ningyo no Yakata
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyazaki Miyakonojo-shi Yamanokuchicho Yamanokuchi 2921-1
This museum was built in 1993 in order to preserve and display ningyo joruri (puppet theater) puppets, a form of traditional culture passed down through the ages in Yamanokuchi Fumoto. Ningyo joruri puppet theater involves the performance of stories by interweaving shamisen music, spoken dialogue, and puppets; the museum contains exhibits on ningyo joruri and also holds scheduled performances four times a year. The art form of a type of ningyo joruri called ko-joruri has been passed down in the Yamanokuchi-cho area unchanged for some 300 years. Preserving and passing on the ancient forms of the bunya ningyo dolls used in the plays, the museum is one of around just four such facilities found in the entire country. The museum's scheduled performances consist of bunyabushi-style ningyo joruri theater, whose traditions date back to the Edo period; and kyogen comic farce interludes which mix in bits of the local dialect for added humor and color.

The museum's castle-like building is a model structure made entirely of wood which was built with subsidies from the Forestry Agency. The museum has a huge, 13-meter-high atrium; and everywhere one looks one can see the building's distinctive wooden framework. The museum's standing exhibition presents the history of Miyakonojo from the distant Jomon period to today.

An unmissable highlight of Kyushu, Miyazaki prefecture satisfies nature lovers with its dramatic gorges cut out of rugged cliffs, leading into waterfalls and beaches of green-blue water popular among surfers. Takachiho Gorge in the north of the prefecture tells a tale of centuries-old Japanese mythology in a fantastic setting, allowing visitors to explore the waters by boat before heading up to the cave at the Awano Iwato Shrine, where the sun goddess was said to have hidden, plunging the world into darkness.
