Located in Kawaimachi, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, this is one of the largest morning markets in Japan and contains between 100 and 250 different stalls. It is said to have a history over 1,000 years old, and many of the sellers and customers are women. You’ll find fresh fish sold by women in the fishing village, locally raised vegetables, handicrafts sold by women of the neighborhood farmhouses, and more, and the energetic sale cries echo throughout the market. The morning market is open from 8 a.m. to noon and is closed for the first three days of the New Year as well as the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month.

There is a convenient parking spot next to the market. We went early around 9am and there were many female vendors cleaning the fishes they were selling. It was very clean despite it is a fresh fish...

A long-standing Japanese confectionary shop located in Kawai Town, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The shop’s signature item is the egara manju, a renowned Wajima sweet. Smooth sweet bean paste wrapped in a glutinous rice flour dough which is dyed a vivid yellow using Cape jasmine which is then steamed to create an extremely rare Japanese treat. The name is said to come from its resemblance to an iga Japanese chestnut, the pronunciation of which was corrupted into “egara.” The name is sometimes also written with characters meaning “fate,” “congratulations,” and “good” for good luck. Extremely popular, egara manju often sell out early in the day.

"A senbei rice cracker shop which is the official senbei provider to the Soji-ji Temple Daihonzan (Head temple), an ancient temple in Wajima. The shop has operated a stall in the Wajima Morning Market for over half a century. The shop's products are popular not only with locals but tourists as well. The shop's senbei are made with ""ingredients needed by your body"" which Japanese people have eaten since ancient times, baked as-is without additives into tasty rice crackers. The shop's crisp and slightly sweet ""Asaichi Senbei Kanmi,"" one of the most popular products sold in the market, are made with potato starch as the main ingredient and are thus also known as ""jagaimo"" (potato) senbei. In addition to old fashioned Wajima-style shio (salt) senbei, the shop's ""Ishiru Senbei,"" made with traditional Noto ishiru fish sauce, are also recommended. (Address listed is for factory. Wajima Morning Market address: 150-3-48 Futegawa-machi Ishida, Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture.)"

"A sake brewery established in 1913 and situated along the Wajima Morning Market street. The brewery was started after the founder was told to do so in a dream by a white horse with a gold gourd tied to it; this anecdote also served as the inspiration for the name of one of the brewery's most popular sake brands, Kinpyo Shirakoma (""Gold Gourd White Horse""). The brewery makes its sakes using well water drawn from under the brewery itself. The brewery takes pride in its Wajima sakes made with water from a well that is the closest to the Sea of Japan of any brewery. Other sake brands the brewery sells include Ore no Sake and Noto no Sake. The brewery's sakes have a crisp, dry flavor; the brewery's shop offers storefront sake tastings."

Ishikawa Areas

around-area-map

Long, thin Ishikawa prefecture runs along the Sea of Japan up into Noto Peninsula. Highlights of the seaside towns lining the west coast include Kanazawa, often described as a "Little Kyoto" thanks to its old wooden tea houses and geisha culture as well as its picturesque Japanese garden, Kenroku-en.
