"The former residence of Jiro Shirasu and his wife, Masako. Shirasu played an important role in post-World War II diplomacy in Japan. On a hill in verdant Tsurukawa, it has a museum, restaurant, and cafe on site. Once known as ""the coolest man in Japan,"" he studied English at Cambridge University, and was said to have argued with GHQ (General Headquarters of the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers), even standing up to MacArthur. Although women had been barred from performing traditional Noh theater, she appeared on stage and was so successful she even had a stage name. The facility is replete with reminders of the couple, and you can even enjoy Western-style fare that faithfully recreates their meals."

It is a biological garden in a residential area a 20-minute walk from Takenotsuka Station. There are about 300 species of living things such as insects, fishes, amphibians and birds that are raised there. It consists of five sections with the theme of ""interactions, life and symbiosis."" You can interact with guinea pigs and rabbits and also feed sheep every day, so it is crowded with many families during long holidays and weekends. At the Okutama Mizu-to-Midori-no-Fureaikan visitors can learn in an easy to understand way about the importance of water and nature, history of Okutama and the structure of dams. Visitors can learn from not only images and exhibitions but also by experience. There is also the Katakuri no Hana restaurant with a panoramic view overlooking Lake Okutama and the natural scenery from the windows, where guests can taste the regional cuisine of Okutama.

This museum, located inside Sunshine City in Ikebukuro, is Japan's first dedicated to displaying materials on the ancient Orient. Designed to be a facility where visitors can learn about history by actually seeing it, exhibits include stone tools used by ancient peoples, recreations and models of ancient settlements, clay vessels and handicrafts exchanged between East and West excavated from archeological digs, and numerous priceless artefacts exhumed in Syria. There's also a movie room where you can watch a short video summarizing the history of the area from the origins of civilization through to the time of the Silk Road. This small zoo opened in 1978 as Japan’s first town-managed zoo, and it’s located about 20 minutes from Hamura Station. The zoo keeps a variety of animals including the popular lesser pandas, giraffes, ostriches, and meerkats. The appeal to the zoo is the fact that it is a small-scale park with an at–home ambience featuring the “Doki-doki Hands-On” area where visitors can pet chicks and guinea pigs and the “Nakayoshi Dobutsu Park” with a fairytale theme where guests can feed goats and miniature pigs. It also has a grassy lawn and a steam locomotive on display, making it a perfect place to picnic and spend a relaxing day.

One of the world's few museums dedicated to volcanoes. With a focus on records pertaining to Izu Oshima's 1986 eruption, visitors learn about volcanism, volcanic disasters, and disaster preparation. The eruption of Mt. Mihara at the center of the island was the first in 565 years as such a large-scale natural disaster that developed into a fissure eruption on the outer crater. The island had an unprecedented evacuation of the entire population, and records pertaining to it are considered crucial for future disaster preparation. Through various exhibits and a capsule that simulates exploring beneath the earth's surface, you learn more about the island's still active volcano and others around the world.

This museum is located within the Ryogoku Kokugikan, and was created to gather and preserve materials related to Japan’s national sport of sumo. In addition to exhibits that change at a pace of six times per years, photos of yokozuna (grand champions) adorn the museum as a permanent exhibition. Admission to the museum is free (though during the three Grand Sumo Tournaments held in Tokyo annually the museum is open only to people actually attending the tournament).

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
