A Shinto shrine based on the popular legend of Urashima Taro, Japan's Rip Van Winkle. The shrine is said to grant worshipper's luck in finding love, long life, and success in fishing and farming. The shrine has carefully preserved various treasures all designated Important Cultural Properties, including Japan's oldest picture scroll depicting the story of Urashima Taro, a delicately patterned short-sleeved kimono, and tortoise shell treasure box. The shrine is also deeply connected to the worship of the stars and the main shrine building is built facing the North Star. In November 2013, the entire main shrine building was designated a National Tangible Cultural Property. Backed by beautiful Mt. Unryu, visitors can also see Nunobiki Falls on the shrine's grounds.

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
