This temple began when third generation shogun of the Muromachi shogunate Ashikaga Yoshimitsu inherited the Saionji family's mountain villa and called the villa “Kitayamadono.” After his death it was changed into a Zen temple named “Rokuonji.” The reliquary hall is a three-story building shining beautifully in gold and looks pretty reflected in the Kyokoike (mirror pond). This brilliant architecture was a symbol of Kitayama culture but burned down in a 1950 fire, then was rebuilt in 1955. In 1994 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It was nice to sit quietly and have a bowl of matcha tea and a sweet while finishing our visit at kinkaku-ji. It wasnt busy at all despite the huge crowds at the temple and the tea was lovely.

    Kyoto Kyoutoshi Kita-ku Takagaminekitatakagaminechou 47
A Soto school Buddhist temple located in the Takagamine area of Kita Ward, Kyoto City. The temple was founded in 1346 by the priest Tetto. The temple’s “Window of Bewilderment” and “Window of Enlightenment” are frequently presented in television programs and guidebooks. It is said that one will gain insights and be led further towards enlightenment by first gazing at the temple garden through the square Window of Bewilderment, representative of human life, and re-examining one’s life so far, then gazing through the round Window of Enlightenment, which expresses a Zen state of mind and represents the cosmos. The temple is also famous for the main hall’s “Bloody Ceiling,” which was once the floor of Fushimi Castle and vividly portrays the tragedy of the castle’s fall.

A secluded Zen temple in Takagamine, Kita Ward, Kyoto City. The Window of Enlightenment and Window of Lostness and Blood Ceiling are the highlights here. In the fall, when you can enjoy the...

A Rinzai Tenryu-ji Buddhist temple located in Kita Ward, Kyoto City. The family temple of the Ashikaga clan, it is also famous for being the grave site of Ashikaga Takauji. The temple garden was created when it was first founded by Muso Kokushi (Soseki), famous as the designer of the gardens at the Tenryu-ji Temple and Saiho-ji Temple (commonly called Koke-dera, Moss Temple). The garden is actually comprised of two separate, differing gardens built around two ponds in the east and west—a dry landscape garden and a traditional circular strolling garden. The western garden is particularly well known for its numerous sights, including the pond created in the shape of a cotton rose blossom, its tea room, and the wooden figures of Ashikaga generals enshrined in the Reikoden hall.

Small temple with garden that has loads to offer. It was one of my favourite temples in all Kyoto. Thats probably the case because we were like 4 visitors around 2 PM on a grey Tuesday. I highly...

Cultural figure Koetsu Honami built a thatched house on this land at the beginning of the Edo period, which later became the Hokke Daimoku-do Hall. There are seven teahouses on the grounds, and in the autumn changing leaves season the cobblestone walkways swathed in red and yellow hues is a beautiful sight.

The Entrance was in full Splender with lovely red Momiji fluttering in the morning sun. Stepping on the diamond-patterned stones leading to the thatched bell tower, we leave modern Kyoto behind...

Daisen-in Temple is a sub temple of Daitokuji Temple and features a great example of a traditional dry landscape garden. The garden spreads in four directions from the main temple building, with its union of white sand and huge stones making a wonderful representation of a seas and rivers.

We felt ripped off after having visited this temple. We paid the price of admission only to be told afterwards that you couldnt take photos of the garden. I fully understand the need for this in the...

"A Buddhist temple located a 15-minute walk from the ""Jinkoin-mae"" municipal bus stop. Officially titled the Kisshozan Shoden Gokoku Zen-ji, its principal object of worship is a statue of Gautama Buddha. The main temple building was moved here from the Konchi-in and was originally that temple's smaller abbot's chambers and is famous for its ""bloody ceiling"" whose panels were originally the floorboards of a corridor where more than 380 people, who had barricaded themselves in Fushimi Castle during immediately prior to the Battle of Sekigahara, committed hara-kiri. Other highlights include a rock garden backed by Mt. Hiei with islands of trimmed satsuki azalea bushes floating on a sea of white sand representing the lucky numbers of seven, five, and three; and a screen painting by Kano Sanraku depicting China's West Lake (today located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province)."

This old temple is a highlight of Nishigamo area. There is a famous garden, which benefits the landscape of Mt. Hiei. The main building, with the paintings of Kano Sanraku, is designated as an...

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Kita-ku Taishogunkawabatacho 2
An old temple nicknamed Tsubaki-dera Temple. It is said to have originated when a Buddhist monk Gyoki built a temple beside Koya-ike Pond in Settsu at the request of Emperor Shomu in 726 and called it Jizo-in Temple. After being moved to the southern part of Mt. Kasayama in the Heian period (794-1185), it was once burned down in the battle of Uchino that took place in 1391, but a temporary hall was erected by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, and in 1589, it was moved to its current location by order of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The 120-year-old five-color, double-flowered chiri-tsubaki tree in front of the main hall is a rare old camellia tree with flowers of various shades of red, white, peach, etc., on a single tree, and the petals shed one by one. It originates from a camellia tree donated by Toyotomi Hideyoshi during the Kitano Grand Tea Ceremony. There are many sights to see in the precincts of the temple, including the graves of Amanoya Rihei, who is said to have supported the raid of Ako Roshi (lordless samurai of Ako domain) on the temple, and Yohantei Hajin, the teacher of the haiku poet Yosa Buson.

Kyoto Areas

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
