This Kannon (Goddess of mercy) temple for driving out evil spirits is said to be the oldest in Japan. With an original legend that it was built in a place where dragons lives, there are many other dragon god legends. A popular one among them, there is a story that a male and female pair of dragons appeared from the pond and protected Kannon when the main temple caught fire 600 years ago. When the floorboards were being replaced about 10 years ago, the image of dragon emerged by chance in the grains of the boards, and this Nade Ryu (stroking dragon) became famous as a power spot since it was said you could receive benefits by stroking it.

Nyu Daishi Shinguji Temple is a five-minute drive from the Seiwa-Taki Interchange on the Kisei Expressway. It was founded in 774, and its formal name is said to have been much longer. The main hall, protected by a Niomon gate, where guardian kings Jikokuten and Tamonten stand at the left and right and are venerated, contains a statue of the temple's founder, Kobo Daishi, who is the principal object of worship. Sugatami Pond, located on the temple grounds, is a favorite spot for amateur photographers, who visit to capture images of the carp that swim around in the pond or the pygmy water lilies that cover the water's surface from late June to early July.

On November 28, 2017, Mieido (hall housing sacred images of the sect founder) and Nyoraido (main hall) were designated as Mie Prefecture's first National Treasure buildings. The grounds are twice the size of Tokyo Dome, and it is a huge temple with 11 nationally-designated Important Cultural Properties besides the two National Treasures. Records state this ancient Buddhist temple was built on the order of Emperor Kameyama in 1267. Many ancient stone statues of Kshitigarbha (Jizo) stand on the grounds, and the temple's principal object of worship is also a depiction of Kshitigarbha; in turn, it can be inferred that the temple was a center of Kshitigarbha worship in the area. The temple's eleven-faced statue of Avalokitesvara (Kannon), adorned with 11 small heads on top, is believed to have been created in the Heian period. The solemn statue bears an expressive face and visible wood grain and has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. There is also a small garden on the grounds started as a hobby by the chief priest which blooms with the flowers of around 200 varieties of roses.
