    Hokkaido Hakodate-shi Motomachi 16-15
This Buddhist temple burned down in 1907 and was rebuilt in 1915 as the first reinforced concrete structure in the country. The temple has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

This is one of many temples such as Jitsugyo-ji Temple and Shomyo-ji Temple, near Hakodate Fishing Port. The temple was originally built in 1633 and relocated once, until being moved to the current location in 1879 due to two fires. Ten of the buildings in the precinct have been dedicated as nationally registered tangible cultural properties. Time flies looking at the lavish and intricate detail of the artistic style and carvings of Edo era craftsmen. Visitors can also see both English and French-style wall fences. Every year in October there is an exhibition of the temple's treasures.

We were in the area looking at the cemetery for Foreigners when we came across this magnificent old Buddhist Temple . A very big complex all made from wood, beautifully done , the carvings are so...

A one-minute walk from the Shomyojidori bus stop. Located close to the Old Russian Consulate, this Buddhist temple adjoins the Jitsugyo-ji Temple. Founded in 1644, the temple was moved to its current location in 1881. The temple is located on a history-leaden site which was once used as a temporary troop headquarters during the changing of the Hakodate Magistrate, and also for temporary British and French consulate when the port was first opened. The temple grounds are also the site of numerous graves and monuments belonging to or honoring eminent persons such as Hijikata Toshizo and the first magistrate of Hakodate.

There are many Buddhist temples in this area. Shoumyouji temple of the Joudo sect is one of the oldest temples in Hakodate established in the Edo era and relocated to the current site in the early...

    Hokkaido Nemuro-shi Matsumotocho 2-2
This is a famous cherry blossom spot in Nemuro, famous for being the end of the Cherry Blossom season in Japan. It's located about a ten-minute walk from Nemuro Station, and the grounds are planted with Chishima cherry trees over 150 years old. The Chishima cherry trees were replanted from Kunashiri Island in the early Meiji period, and are also called Etorofu and Kunashiri cherry. They are marked by being much shorter than other cherry tree varieties. The official Full Bloom Announcement for Nemuro, which usually comes in May, is made based on a Chishima cherry tree standard at the former Nemuro Weather Measurement Station. This is the nation's only Chishima cherry tree standard, and many people come from all over Japan to see the spring at the eastern edge of Japan.

    Hokkaido Sapporo-shi Nishi-ku Kotoni 3-jo 6-1-28
This ancient temple is in Kotoni, where the first military settlers came to Hokkaido in 1875. Most of the settlers who came here to develop Hokkaido were followers of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism, and records say this temple was built to satisfy settlers' calls for a place of worship. The Shourou sanmon gate was built in 1998, and is of a now-rare traditional wooden architectural style. This massive gate rests in a comfortable old residential neighborhood, and seems to have the power to stop everyone passing by in their tracks. This place is famous in Kotoni for the 108 Bell-ringing on New Year's Eve, and anyone who gets a number ticket can ring the bell themselves.

    Hokkaido Hiyama-gun Esashicho Honcho 71
"This is a temple in Hamanaka Town, Akkeshi, Hokkaido. It is one of the few ancient temples in Hokkaido, located in a vast land with flower wetlands. It was founded in Kaminokuni in 1521 and transferred to Esashi and reconstructed in 1668. The main temple building was erected five years later. The temple preserves artworks of high cultural value such as Buddhist paintings and folding screens. Highlights are the Sanmon gate with a history of more than 300 years, a large tree that is several hundred years old, and the ""Happo-nirami Dragon"" drawn on the seven-meter square ceiling of the main hall. The appearance of the picture of the dragon in the darkness is stunning."

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
