This sachet and scent shop is about ten minutes' walk from Kamigamo-jinja Shrine. Their handmade sachets use chirimen silk crepe, and feature colorful seasonal floral designs. The building is overflowing with a sense of Kyoto history, as it is the Isekike Jutaku, a Kyoto Registered Tangible Cultural Property once used as a home for Shinto priests. The house is influenced by the history of the worship of Kamobetsu Raijin as the Kamoagata Nushi lords. The elegant space uses a side entrance, and is filled with colorful sachets. They also sell phone straps and goods with small animal designs, all popular souvenirs.

This specialty shop for crafting tsumami (small accessories) located in the Kita Ward of Kyoto City in Kyoto Prefecture is based in a machiya (townhouse) with a dignified appearance that was built in Japan’s Taisho period. Inside, the shop has arranged many lovely little tsumami crafts including hair ornaments and colorful kimono accessories made from old cloth recycled from kimonos. The “tsumami workshop experience” is popular as it enables participants to make their own original hairpins by arranging cloths in their choice of colors. One of the shop’s artisans will carefully explain how to make tsumami, starting with how to handle the necessary implements, so even beginners can participate with ease (advance reservation required).

Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
