Shakuzoji, also known as Kuginukijizo, is said to have been built in 819 by Kobo Daishi. The Jizo main object of worship is said to have been carved from a stone brought back by Kobo Daishi from the Tang Dynasty. As it removes anguish it is known as “Kunuki Jizo” (pain removing Jizo) but through mispronunciation the temple became known as Kuginuki Jizo. The main temple building is full of votive pictures of a nail and pincers intertwined attached by those who were suffering and became free through prayer.

This Zen temple in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto City honors deities like the bodhisattva Kannon. Also known as The Doll Temple, it houses an array of dolls, including those of the Emperor Komei. Usually it's not open to the public, however there's a doll exhibition every spring and autumn when visitors pour in.

It is a Monzeki temple (a temple related to the imperial family), which is located at Horikawa Teranouchi. The entrance gate is very imposing, but on the day I was there it was not open to public.

A Shingon Chisan Buddhist temple located in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. The temple was founded in 1221 by the priest Giku and is also called Senbonshaka-do (the Thousand Buddha Temple). The main hall has escaped numerous wars and fires and looks as it did when it was first built. It is the oldest structure in Kyoto City and is designated a National Treasure. The grounds are home to Okame-zuka, the Tomb of Okame, master carpenter’s wife, and the temple attracts an unending stream of worshipers from around the nation due to its resulting association with aiding in finding marriage, marital happiness, and having children. In the Kamakura period (1185–1333), a monk cut Sanskrit characters into a daikon (radish) to pray for good health; today, the temple’s daikon-offering ceremony held in December is a key winter event in Kyoto.

The head temple of the Hokkeshu sect Shinmonryu school of Buddhism which first opened in 1488. It's also called the Unburnable Temple as the main hall and founder's hall escaped disaster as the Nishijin area twice burned down around it. With sakura cherry blossoms in the spring, crape myrtle in the summer, changing autumn colors in the fall, and the snow-covered temple grounds in the winter, the temple is a popular location for those looking to take a stroll and take in the seasonal scenery. The grounds are home to the Chiyonoi Well, one of the Nishijin area's five famous wells, as well as the Yonakidome Pine Tree whose needles or bark are said to stop babies night-crying if placed under their pillows.

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
