Osorezan, which was founded in 862 by Jikaku Taishi, is one of Japan’s three largest reizan (sacred mountains) which also include Hiezan and Koya-san. It prospered as a place for the Tendai sect of Shugendo (a Japanese mountain asceticism incorporating Shinto and Buddhist concepts). Sights to see include the arching bridge over what is supposed to represent the Sanzu no Kawa (which has to be crossed by all dead souls on their way to afterlife and is often compared to the River Styx of ancient Greek mythology), Jigokudani (Hell Valley), and the beautiful Sai no Kawara (Dry Bed of the River of Souls) that makes one think of the Sukhavati (Amitabha’s Pure Land).

Having read a great deal about the history and cultural significance of this wonderful place I was determined to visit here. Hired a car from near our accommodation in Mutsu and very easy drive...

"This Buddhist temple has garnered worshipers due to it being known as ""Owani no Dainichi"" in Tsugaru. During the Nara period (710-794), with the construction of Emperor Shomu's provincial temple, Dainichi Nyorai was enshrined at Daiankoku Temple. In 1191, it was transferred to Kohaku Temple, and during the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism in 1871, it was moved from Hirosaki City to Daienji Temple. The ""Amitabha statue"" called ""Dainichi"" as the object of worship has been designated an important cultural property. It is thought that a Buddhist sculptor from the capital who visited Hiraizumi used Hiba sypress and sculpted it in Owani."

    Aomori Hirosaki-shi Aramachi 247
It is said that the town was established in 1596, when the first feudal lord of Hirosaki, Tsugaru Tamenobu, held a funeral for his mother and invited Yutei Shonin to open a temple. It is a fine and rare representation of Edo's mid-era Zen Buddhism Sanmon architecture and was designated national important cultural property in 1938. Inside the temple, there are many gravestones of late feudal lords of Tsugaru such as Numata Sukemitsu.

This is another area of sacred ground on the Tsugaru Peninsula besides Mt. Osore, and is located in Kanagi-machi, Goshogawara City. The over 2,000 statues of Ksitigarbha create a unique atmosphere. A large festival is held every year from June 22th to June 24th of the old calendar, during which mediums channel spirits as they do on Mt. Osore.

    五所川原市金木の芦野湖の東岸にある、 ブッダ・オドウです。地域の特徴的な土着信仰が色濃く残っており、独特のアトモスフィアに包まれています。訪問の際には敬虔さを忘れずに。

A temple of the Shingon sect’s Daigo school of Buddhism, this was built in 807 as a temple dedicated to Kannon by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, the first Seii Taishogun (literally “great general” who subdues the barbarians). The temple enshrines a statue of the Eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu which is said to be the work of Shotoku Taishi. People believed Maguchi Kannon watched over the entrance to port, and one time when sailors were caught in a storm they chopped off their topknot and offered prayers, and reportedly spotted a light coming from an old cryptomeria on the grounds which saved them. Sights not to be missed include those topknots tablets that were offered and boat-shaped ema (votive pictures), the Engakuji Yakushido-naizushi, a miniature shrine with double doors which is an important cultural property, and temple treasures including the image of Shaka Nyorai in Nirvana embroidered with the hair of 84,000 people and Sanjusan Kannon-zo.

Unshoji Temple, built in 1596, is famous as a temple connected to Osamu Dazai. The fact that he was brought to Unshoji Temple as a child by his baby-sitter is depicted in his works, and after that he also visited when he evacuated to his family home to escape the air raids. The Osamu Dazai Historical Monument was also built in 2008. It is a seven minute walk from Kanagi Station on the Tsugaru Railway Line.

Aomori Areas

around-area-map

Centuries-old stories of samurai at Kakunodate and the remains of millennia-old archaeological sites including the likes of Isedotai invite history buffs to delve into Aomori’s fascinating history. As the most northern prefecture on the Japanese mainland, Aomori enjoys a cooler climate, which makes it a welcome escape from the southern cities for combining castles, art galleries, and summer festivals with the great outdoors.
